hard starting help needed
My 2001 KLR has always had a starting problem. It seems to take all
of the battery juice to start it. Once it gets warmed up, it restarts
fine.
I start using full choke and no throttle.
Please offer a suggestion or modification that would cause my bike to
start easlier when the engine is cold.
Thanks for your help.

I supposed moving to Florida is not a very helpful suggestion? I too would
be interested in any answers you receive personally.

It seems that every time I've had a problem like that a new spark plug fixed
it up. If it still has the orginal plug chances are thats the problem. I
always start my bike cold with full choke and never have a problem (even in
cold weather). Either way its one of three things, not enough air (check
filter), Fuel flow off ( idle funny when warm also), No fire (plug or
wiring).

How often do you use your bike? Mine gets about 300mi/week, riding
Sundays and Wednesdays. I've never had a starting problem. My experience
has been (with a lot of different bikes) that for them to be reliable,
you need to ride them regularly.
Changing the spark plug on a KLR is a hassle, unfortunately you need to
do this at least once to see what the plug looks like. If it's dirty,
changing the plug will help until it fouls again. If it's bone-white, or
very clean, likely it's too lean to easily start, or the fuel evaporates
from the carb while you aren't riding it. Stabil or similar fuel
stabilizers will help if you don't ride often. Pump gas can go stale in
three weeks, the gas companies don't put in stabilizers anymore.
If the plug looks really clean, you might get easier starting by
removing the anti-tamper plug on the pilot mixture screw, and turning
out the mixture screw another 1/2 or 3/4 turn. People on the list are
fond of turning it way out, until the bike starts without the choke, but
this isn't really normal operation and it makes a clean-running motor go
stinky.

I wonder about the setting of your pilot screw, especially since you've always had the problem. The most common setting is 2 - 2 1/2 turns out. The following website should give you a good idea of what's up. Also, search the archives or ask for further help if you think this is worth looking into... http://members.aol.com/roundr1/CVK40.html Wise men still seek Him... Have you tried adjusting the choke cable? Made a difference when I
first got my KLR.

Do the idle screw mod;
drill out the CORRECT plug, screw in the mixture screw gently until it
seats, then turn it out 2 to 2 1/2 turns. Congratulations, you have made
your bike a real pussycat to start.

miles - who has the most nklr?
My A10.5 (the A10 model that came with the A11 factory upgraded
parts) has 35,000 not so friendly miles on it since bought with
.2 miles on it in mid '97. Poor thing looks like it's been slid
on it's side one too many times, because it has. Still running
strong. Maintainence consists of whenever I get around to it -
usually a major service every 5,000 miles.
