kawasaki tail and saddlebags

I am considering buying the Kawasaki OEM tailbag and saddlebags for my KLR650-A15. I would appreciate any comments good or bad on them. thanks Mark Benson KLR650-A15 Honda QA-50(!)

I have had the saddlebags for about a month and have done one trip with them. They are small but they can be stuffed. The quality is pretty good, they take the rough roads great and they are easy to put on and take off. They are not water proof so you will have to zip lock any wettables. I like em! Rob

I went down to my local dealer and took a peek at the tail bag. I was very un-impressed. I also really didn't like the fact that neither the tail bag or the saddle bags are available with rain covers. Rain covers, I believe, are a must. I recently recieved my JcWhitney saddle bags. They appear to be well made, and come with rain covers. They were also only $119. I also got the hard-plastic-locking tail box, which I am also VEry pleased with. Ryan Phoenix

I like the Chase-Harper ET4000 bags. They hold more than the Kawi bags and are unconditionally guaranteed for life. They cost more, though. A friend bought the C-H dual-sport bags for a recent trip and wishes he'd bought the ET4000's--they hold more and are easier to get into. Arden Kysely A11 "Mr. K"

Mark, I have the tank bag and the saddlebags, both of which I am pleased with. The tank bag offers a great deal of capacity. The tailbag from what I have been told, takes up all of the passenger space, so it's not good for 2 up riding, otherwise I would have gotten it too. The saddlebags are nice, lots of space, but I would recommend the SU Racks that are available. I have not made that investment yet, but plan to so I can use my saddle bags more. I've used the Kawi tailbag and I loved it! I ended up using it instead of a tankbag, plus it held a whole bunch more. I never had any issues with mine, and it went from carrying my lunch to work to being a carry-all in Moab. Great bag. Karl

I agree with Karl, but I have both Kawi tank and tail bags. The tailbag holds lots of tools, clothes, spare tube, tire pump, tire irons, chain lube, TP, and beer. I store the dirty stuff (tools, tube, lube, etc.) in the side compartments so they don't get my clothes dirty. Kawi's tail bag has worked for me camping several times, it _does not_ take up your passenger space at all unless you mount it wrong, I think it's a fine piece of equipment.
