motor/bike longevity

Howdy listers, I'm considering a purchasing a 1988 KLR 650. I took it for a test ride. It's been used but doesn't appear to have been abused. It has 29,600 miles and the owner wants $1500.00. Seems to be a fair price but I don't know diddly about KLR's. According to the owner, the rear shock was rebuilt last year by White Brothers. It has a Supertrapp exhaust which has slightly toasted the edge of the rear fender. It has scrapes but no deep gouges I could find. The assembly holding the front headlight is missing a piece from the top. Lastly, it has a slight engine rattle (sounds like valves) which the owner attributes to his last valve adjustment where he replaced shims to leave the valves towards the loose end of spec's. What kind of mileage can I expect (hope for??) from a KLR of this vintage? Also, is there a url for a KLR FAQ? Thanx in advance. Jeff Jones

It'll go 50K easy before major maintenance, but $800 is about the max I'd pay for this particular bike. Mark B2 A2 A3
