Brad, I'll bet the base synthetic oil is similar, but I'll bet the additive package for the four stroke motorcycle specific Mobil-1 is quite different from the additive package for automotive Mobil-1. I run the four stroke motorcycle Mobil-1 motorcycle oil in my KLR650. I change it every 2,000 miles. If the cost of the analysis is not excessive, I would be very interested to have an analysis done on my drained motorcycle-specific Mobil-1. I really like having data instead of only opinions and marketing spin. If the analysis shows that automotive Mobil-1 holds up and lubricates as well as the motorcycle-specific Mobil-1, heck I'll switch to the less expensive automotive Mobil-1. Mark, I agree that data is better. But to quote an article: "Industry insiders will tell you, over a beer and a burger (or sake and sushi, red wine and rigatoni, or bockbier and borscht), that the synthetic, bike-only oils are more a marketing ploy than a product that offers superior lubrication performance. I know this because that's what they told me, after talking to their engineers. The synthetics seem to offer little additional value when it comes to actually lubricating moving parts. The use of a high-quality conventional oil in the correct grade which meets the same API standards should yield essentially the same wear patterns over the service life of the engine, if it is changed frequently. The exception is for an engine that sees maybe 3,000 miles per year (which equates to an annual oil change), is used for short trips, and suffers a disproportionate number of cold starts. The synthetic's ability to cling to engine parts, and its retention of lubricity over time, make it a good choice under those circumstances." I have been to Biloxi several times for training classes, never had my bike although. I can tell you that riding through some of the backroads I saw plenty of trails going into the woods that seemed very inviting for a KLR. Definitely ride the KLR to New Orleans, parking there is the pits in a car if your going to be doing the smack down on Bourbon St that is.
