Mine has a very slight leak that only drips when the bike has been riden under hot conditions for at least an hour. So far it hasn't dripped enough to require that I add oil. I might get it fixed when I have something else done, but I might not. Gives the bike character. BTW, if you didn't watch the Brainerd superbike race today live on Speedvision you missed an absolutely fab race. It reruns at 10 p.m. Eastern tonight. Don't miss it if you have even a remote interest in superbike racing. Ralph Ralph Hanson 1999 KLR 650 rhanson40@... http://www.wvu.edu/~journal2/west

Yeah, what I thought was chain oil on the underside of the bike this past weekend from overspraying, I'm afraid is mild oil leak from somewhere. It's not major and it's not getting on the rear tired but it's a pain in ass. About every 400 miles I'm noticing myself having to put in about 3/4 of a quart of oil. I have been riding it hard. The past 600 miles or so I've been averging about 85-90mph on the highways at about 55000 RPM and I'm while all the temps are low and the coolant is fine and the bike "seems" fine I'm wondering if I'm killing this bike only 4,000 miles into it's lifespan. Unfortunately, 80mph (indicated) on our highways around here is about "average" speed. Going slower I get stuck in the backdraft of all the cars in the slow lane, going faster appears to be killing the bike :(

Gary- Dunno if you've checked for spline wear, but isn't the leading cause of hair-loss, I mean, oil leaking from the CS an over tightened chain? I would think this would be visible on the CS splines if that were the case... Hopefully it isn't as a CS replacement is very very pricey (I think that you have to split the cases). If you've got a pre 1993, I would seriously recommend a Jake Jakeman Sprocket Retainer and Shim set... My 1991 KLR with 9k miles has visible wear on the CS splines!!! So this was a good upgrade for me, especially considering that the teeth on the OEM retainer were about 75% gone. Jake charges $20-25 for the kit I think (I don't have his price list handy), check out a picture of the kit at http://zaphod.smartbrief.com/pics/csretainerkitcomplete.JPG and http://zaphod.smartbrief.com/pics/csretainercloseupsmall.JPG ... my old retainer can be seen at http://zaphod.smartbrief.com/pics/stockcsretainersmall.JPG and as you can see, it was at the end of its usefulness. I HIGHLY recommend this kit for ANY pre 1993 KLR. Don't leave home without it ;) ------------------ Zack Banana Republic of Washington, DC KLR650A5 "Buster" | KLR650A2 | ZG1000A1 | KZ440A2 | KX125G1 | 1966 Vespa 125 COG #4664

Cheers Zack The kit you posted [jake jakeman] looks like the dogs dangly bits, but having talked to an old friend in the trade tonight, I might try his remedie if my earlier attempt with silicone fails, The solution he gave me was araldite rapid for the seal against the crankcase to the outer part of the output shaft oilseal. However knowing my luck and the milage 30k ,the splines are all worn out!. Anyway let you know tommorow the outcome. Cheers Gary

f##king oil leak

Post by Randy.Hoskins@worldnet.att.net » Mon Jul 30, 2001 11:03 pm

Eric, Going to and from Moab, I discovered much the same problem. I was leaking oil from behind the drive sprocket. Roaring down the freeway at 85, I was losing about half a quart every tankfull (200 miles.) This was on a bike that had previously gone 3500 hard (bad road) miles without needing any oil. Over the course of the trip, I discovered that if kept the speed down to 75 (indicated) the leak stopped. I came to the conclusion that the bike was telling it didn't mind being run hard, it just didn't like droning down the freeway at high speed. I came to the same conclusion, I don't like droning down the freeway. I think that if I had to spend much time on the road, I would switch to the 16 tooth driven sprocket. For me anyway, that would make the difference between leak and no-leak. A couple of the other people on the list seem to like the bigger sprocket because it reduces vibration at speed. Gary, Now that you have become an expert in changing the output shaft seal, how big a job is it. I have an leak under fairly limited circumstances (see previous post). If it ever gets worse and I have to replace it, is it a one hour job or an all weekend job? Scoping out the extent of the fix helps me decide how bad it has to be before I fix it. Eric, Mister T is right, replace the o-ring behind the collar and you'll see the oil leak disappear. This happened to me and after trying everything else, the o-ring (cheapest fix) was the culprit. Eric Lewis Honolulu, Hi. A8 [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]
