I wasn't sure I'd make it to Moab, partly because the idea of riding 1500 miles of highway on the KLR to get there didn't seem that appealing. So when is this Moab thing again? Gustavo

O-NO, I was afraid of that. I havent checked around here yet, I will call around later, when the shops are open, and see if it will be possible for me to get a FZ1 this spring. I was going to wait till the bike shows here next month to start inquiring about it, but it might be too late already. This stinks! Thanks for the heads up anyway. I'll let yall know if I can secure a deal on one. MotorMark

I just got off the phone with one of the local yamaha dealers around here, and he told me if I come on down and put a deposit down, I can get the first FZ1 they get. We dont have our bike shows until next month here, and after that, they will be in short supply. But right now, I can still get one. I cant go to make the deposit today, but probably will tomarrow. Now I have to decide, blue or black........ MotorMark

Hi Mark,   Have you checked insurance prices lately on sport bikes?  I just bought some full coverage insurance on my new VFR800FI.  The last time I bought insurance on my XR650L, I just got liability and it cost about $30 a year from Dairyland Insurance.  I got an online quote yesterday from Dairyland for the VFR and they issued the dreaded words.. "Performance Bike".  Their quote was for $1060.  WOW!  And I have a clean driving record and I am older than dirt.  So I got some other quotes.  Gino gave me a number to call for National General and they said that they wouldn't even insure a VFR but that I should call Progressive Insurance.  Progressive was very nice and had a quote of about $220 till they found out that the VFR was a "Performance Bike" and then their very reasonable quote shot up to $980.  I said I needed to shop some more so I went down to my local State Farm agent and she says that for a 800cc Honda my rates would be $252.  I said "What about my Performance Bike?"  and she says it doesn't matter.  They just go by size of the engine.  So I am now fully insured and pretty pleased with my decision.  I am sure that new Yamaha will be in the Performance Bike category, so shop around and you might find a deal like I did.   Good luck!   Fred www.arrowheadmotorsports.com '00 VFR800FI '00 XR650R (2)'94 XR650L 4 sale '94 XR250L 4 sale (300 mi) '78 Z1-R 4 sale

Fred, I hope you're enjoying the VFR, I check the weather around the country every day and I guess it's been up to the thirties there in Moab, or the low forties. Insurance companies make PLENTY of money off of those who don't take the time to shop around. There are plenty of fellows out there who pay the $980 for the performance bike rates. My new Bandit upped my policy a total of $170 a year, I thought that was fair enough for full coverage, which I have on all three (Natl Genl, now GMAC). Backroad Bill, no barbecue tonight - spent the day riding around the wine country, they tell me it's work! Got up to the sixties today, although lots of ice in the morning. Gotta love it! Anybody notice the days are already getting longer? We've gained about 15 minutes in the evening already. Cheers!

You just had to go and mention insurance, didnt you!  No, I havent checked yet. I guess it would be a good idea to check that out before I go and put a deposit on the bike, huh.  I have progressive with my other bikes, so I'll call them first.  But it sounds like state farm is the way to go... In the MotorCyclist mag, the FZ1 is listed as a standard bike, not a sport bike. I'm hoping that will make a difference.  Like Bandits are cheaper on ins. than the super sport bikes. But if the insurance isnt going to be too bad, I might go put the deposit on it today. Am I gonna be able to get knobbies mounted when I get to Moab?   MotorMark
