Motorcycle.com has a crash report up on their site that's worth looking at: http://www.motorcycle.com/mo/mcfeatures/accident.html Bottom line is that good gear is important when you crash. There are a couple of good photos of how the 'Stich and helmet looked after the crash. I go back and forth about wearing my Darien pants around town, though I always wear jacket, boots and gloves. You can go ahead and skip the pants--you just have to make sure your legs never touch the ground when you crash. BTW, there is lots of reader feedback to the article relating more crash experiences. But we never get to hear from the ones who might have the most to teach us--the ones with the really really bad crashes. Dreas

Yes made me think too....I have the Darien but no pants.....just gone done odering a one piece Roadmaster....11 week delivery time though!!! But at least then I will HAVE to wear the pants too! Craig, Go to http://www.dualsport.org/ , click on ARCHIVES PAGE and then click on KLR650 OIL FILTER COMPARISON. There's a wealth of accessory & technical information on the archives page. The only drawback to the "permanent" filter, other than the $70 cost, is that about 4 ounces of old oil remains in the filter housing if you don't change the filter and don't drain the old oil from the oil channel by removing the small oil drain cap screw at the right front of the engine, near the water pump. Given the minimal changes on the KLR over the years, I'd be surprized if your '87 err... '01 filter is any different. Can't hurt to check, you sure don't want to make a mistake with oil filters.
