I realize there will never be a consensus on this topic (or most others for
that matter), but the diverse points of view are always interesting and
extremely educational. So I'll ask a very loaded question... What's the
current wisdom on chain lube products/procedures? I'm not inclined to do a
Scott Oiler or Loobman system at this time. Any products that have proven to
be totally bogus? Fire away folks, load me up with info!!

All chain mfrs. recommend the same thing: 90wt gear oil API GL-5. My personal experience is that they're right, but you have to decide if you can deal with the mess. Jess,
I prop up the bike with a jack so the rear tire turns
freely. I then take an oil can and run a bead of 90w
on the right side orings then the left side orings.
Thats it. After a while you get the hang of it and
don't over lube it.

Jess,
Some of the guys on this list use WD40 with good
results. I just like to stick to what the manual
recommends. Plus 90w is inexpensive or you can spring
for synthetic 90w if you are so inclined.

Jess,
I use regular oil in my cars/KLR too. I change the oil
frequently in my bike so I don't think synthetic would
help me much. I sold my last car with 250k on the
odometer. I used regular oil it's whole life and when
I sold it it was burning less than 1 quart per 3000
miles.
