Sooty Spark Plugs

Post by Bud Bradford » Mon May 09, 2005 11:19 am

Hello to everyone. Spring has finally come to northwestern North Carolina. First - car runs fine but it seems like something is not quite as good as it could be. Plugs 1 and 4 are chocolate brown and dry, plugs 2 and 3 are sooty black and a little oilly. Anyone out there have a hint as to why this is? Thanks all. AW: [mg-tabc] Sooty Spark Plugs

Post by Paroor » Mon May 09, 2005 12:37 pm

Hi Bud Bradford, Since two and three plugs are black, the carburettors are ok. There may be many reasons. Is all the plugs the same type ? and replaced the same time ? With colder plugs you may get this effect ? But I hope this not your case. Are you sure that the distributor shaft has no play and contacts are set proper ? Next is the piston rings are worn, stuck or broke in second and third cylinders. Is the valve clearance set proper ? Did you check-up the compression in all four cylinders ? The next reason may be the valve guides are loose in second and third cylinder, letting oil in to the cylinders. These are the things I want to check-up first. Hi Bud, I'm too new to the TC world, to offer any advice on issues particular to them but here are some general things to check: Run a compression test to rule out ring issues in cyls 2 & 3? Check that the ignition leads are tight and use an ohm meter to check for excessive resistance or a break. I doubt that it's a single carb issue, as this would probably affect cyls 1 & 2 or 3 & 4 not 2 & 3. Good Luck! Hello Bud, for what it`s worth here`s a thought...pots 2 & 3 share the same position on the crank as regards TDC, and naturally BDC, could it be that when you laid up your old girl, 2&3 were at BDC just after an induction stroke and the rings are suffering from a bit of `stiction` in their grooves from fuel vapour ?.....not that the rings will expand that much but with a bit of piston slap they could have come to rest not quite concentric. You don`t say how long 6761 was having a nap or if it was cuffing out blue smoke when you woke her up but if any of this seems remotely feasable try pouring a little `upper cylinder lubricant` ( REDEX here in UK ) into the plughole and leave it to seep into the ring grooves for a couple of days and it might just loose `em off....hope it is something this simple, but it can`t be anything drastic...can it ??..
