Cousin Carey, That was not an uncommon customization back when the cars were daily drivers. Usually the fender was just bobbed smoothly where it would have secured to the running board. The July 1952 issue of US magazine Auto Speed and Sport is a Special MG Issue and shows, amongst many other period accessories, bobbed wings on TDs and I feel they make the car look sportier and longer. Remember : le poids, voil l ennemi . Also most cars shown  have a fully louvred bonnet. Should look the same on a tabc. If my TB had been in bad condition, I should have done the 2 mods. Probably a mod with no running boards. Pointed front fenders? , Maybe, my 1949 MG TC attached, pointed front fenders?? Guess it depends on your definition.

No cars came like that. Probably an owners mod, or as you suggest, a rust or damage limitation exercise A well faired in front wing and no running boards does look quite nice. My '51 TD has had bobbed fenders and no running boards since sometime in the 1950's.  The original owner, Washington Daily News sports writer Dick Lord, was an avid racer and was a regular at Marlboro, Elkhart Lake and other venues until his death in the late 60's.  When I acquired the car from his estate in the early 70's' I discovered evidence of a possible reason for the fenders being bobbed:  The driver's side fender had been crunched, probably in a track mishap, and he simply cut off and leaded in the worst mangled section at the front, faired in the rear and then cut and faired the passenger fender to match!  In case you're wondering about the XK120 rear bumpers and trailer hitch at the rear in one of the photos, when the TD was no longer competitive he used it as a tow car for his Fairthorpe Electron!

Octagoners, I just remembered that some TDs also had the leading edge of the fender (wing) cut to resemble a TC. I thought it looked really cool when I saw them in the 50s, but I saw one recently and think I know why Abingdon brought the TDs fenders (wings) low over the front. The suspension is too modern to pull off the vintage look so they hid it under the fender (wing).
