Hi Pete,

I always thought they were copper one side and hide the other. I always use the hide side to save damage especially as new spinners are bronze/brass now as opposed to steel.

My tool roll has the proper hammer but for garage use I use an inertia rubber mallet which works a treat, no damage and works every time.

All originality aside for a moment, do the CNC or laser cut wooden wrenches mar the knockoffs? Is this what most owners use? I recently purchased a new set- ($) , and I want to preserve them from scratches as long as possible. I fully disagrre with you, I have had the 1946 Thor n 1 that came with my TC for 53 years
during which I changed wheels many times and I love my old hammer with its many scars
and stained handle that are souvenirs of our life together (and our breakdowns!).
As it can be prewar, it goes well with my 78 years old TB and we all look our age (I am 73). I feel cars are meant to be used on the road, of course you need to take care of them,
service them, clean them... and happily get old(er) together. Jean and TB0592

The wood tools don't seem to mar the spinners, but my experience with them overall has been disappointing. The wood does not last very long compared to metal hammers. The wood tool is also a bit more awkward than using a hammer by itself, and it moves the strike area much closer to the bodywork. Probably not as much of a problem on a TC as on cars with smaller wheels like MGA/B. My tool of choice is the faux lead hammers as sold by Moss and others. It gives a good solid blow, and over the past 15 years I haven't suffered so much as a scratch on a spinner ear. The hammer will eventually wear out because it's designed to sacrifice itself in order to protect the chrome spinner. In my garage, one of these hammers will last several years before it's too worn down to be useful. And since the hammer is double sided, it removes both left and right hand spinners. (yes that last line was a joke) Some people also use plastic dead blow hammers with good results, although they don't look as "correct" as a metal one and when old the plastic can get brittle. I've also heard of some using rubber mallets but I've never found one heavy enough that wasn't the size of a Buick. Rawhide doesn't seem to scratch but it doesn't last very long at all. Some would say that a chipped and worn spinner adds character .. Mine are very characterful.

The wood tools don't seem to mar the spinners, but my experience with them overall has been disappointing.  The wood does not last very long compared to metal hammers.  The wood tool is also a bit more awkward than using a hammer by itself, and it moves the strike area much closer to the bodywork.  Probably not as much of a problem on a TC as on cars with smaller wheels like MGA/B. My tool of choice is the faux lead hammers as sold by Moss and others.  It gives a good solid blow, and over the past 15 years I haven't suffered so much as a scratch on a spinner ear.  The hammer will eventually wear out because it's designed to sacrifice itself in order to protect the chrome spinner.  In my garage, one of these hammers will last several years before it's too worn down to be useful.  And since the hammer is double sided, it removes both left and right hand spinners.  (yes that last line was a joke) Some people also use plastic dead blow hammers with good results, although they don't look as "correct" as a metal one and when old the plastic can get brittle.  I've also heard of some using rubber mallets but I've never found one heavy enough that wasn't the size of a Buick.  Rawhide doesn't seem to scratch but it doesn't last very long at all.  Copper will definitely mar / dent the chrome. - Steve Simmons, TC8975
