harbor freight hitch rack

Post by Eddie » Wed Jun 04, 2014 3:18 pm

I was looking through a copy of Rider magazine and spotted a Haulmaster brand hitch-mounted motorcycle carrier in a Harbor Freight ad. It's rated at 400 pounds. I couldn't help notice the picture has pre 08' KLR in the rack. That's pushing the load limit to the edge, isn;t it? =)

harbor freight hitch rack

Post by John Biccum » Wed Jun 04, 2014 4:36 pm

I can confirm the weight limit!   I used this carrier to haul  my KLR about 800 miles of interstate and as I was unloading the bike I was horrified to discover that the aluminum extrusion that carried the load had cracked at the root of the fillet radius.  I was just a bump or two from depositing the KLR and the "deck" of the carrier onto the road. The weak link of this product is this extrusion with T-shaped cross-section. Mine has now been modified (thanks to KLRista Mark W in MI) by replacing this fragile extrusion with a steel weldment that consists of a square steel tube to suit the 2x2 receiver tube which is welded to a flat steel plate. The failed extrusion has no part number in the drawing in the Harbor Freight manual but you can see it just to the left of part number 10 in the drawing in the manual.  Manual available here: http://manuals.harborfreight.com/manual ... /99721.pdf From: DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com Sent: 6/ 4/ 2014 13:18 To: DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com Subject: [DSN_KLR650] Harbor freight hitch rack   I was looking through a copy of Rider magazine and spotted a Haulmaster brand hitch-mounted motorcycle carrier in a Harbor Freight ad. It's rated at 400 pounds. I couldn't help notice the picture has pre 08' KLR in the rack. That's pushing the load limit to the edge, isn;t it? =) -eddie

I briefly owned a steel version bought in Canada which although challenging to load and unload seemed plenty strong enough however my buick rendezvous was not. The next factor how are any of you with these contraptions securing the bike such that it does not come in contact with the back of your vehicle when you go over a bump. I was not comfortable with the situation.Nick bSarnia ontario Sent from Samsung Mobile -------- Original message -------- From: "John Biccum johnbiccum@... The weak link of this product is this extrusion with T-shaped cross-section. harbor freight hitch rack

Post by Desert Datsuns » Wed Jun 04, 2014 5:28 pm

Been thinking about getting one of these on-and-off for a while. Then I could put a cap on the bed of the pickup. I ride dirt bikes a lot too. I think I'll just build my own that can support a heavy bike. Not Harley heavy, but 600lbs would allow me to carry a lot of types of bikes. Maybe make it double-entry with two rails, so 2 bikes could fit, and each rail loads from an opposite side. Would also make loading and unloading the dirtbikes easier than them going in the bed, since it's a lot closer to the ground. Hmmmmmm.......if it wasn't like 110 outside today, I may have just gone and fiddled with the idea.RyanPhoenix "63urban 63urban@... Remember to BOOSTER Shocks. When you put heavy loads on hitch, it takes weight away from the front tires. (& front does most of the braking)  I have pulled trailers most my life, it doesn't take as much as you would think.  On Wednesday, June 4, 2014 6:28 PM, "Desert Datsuns datsun@... harbor freight hitch rack

I use one of these: http://www.joehauler.com/singlehaulers/singlehaulers.shtml  behind my '06 Toyota Tundra with the OEM Class III receiver. I've safely hauled everything from my '74 Vespa to a Honda CB650SC Nighthawk for extended distances on the Interstate and on rural roads. For heavier bikes, I recommend you have a "spotter" assist you until you get the hang of rolling up and securing a bike. Also make sure the angle of the short ramp it comes with is such that the bike you're rolling up does not bottom out. Also make sure you have the front brake covered so you don't go over the front wheel stop... it gets messy.  Bob B

harbor freight hitch rack

Post by GMac999 » Thu Jun 05, 2014 7:16 am

I use what is now called their extended single hauler. A little different from everyone so far. I have a front hitch and load it in front of my truck. That way I can tow the 5th wheel on the back.

key & cash stash?

Post by mark ward » Fri Jun 06, 2014 10:51 am

Hey Y'all
New STASH place, Tip, please do NOT post the idea for the rest of the world.
Always thinking, I was replacing the wrap around INFLATABLE  "cheek" insert in my Scorpion helmet. (Fast warranty)  and had an idea.
SPARE KEY AND CASH STASH. ($20-50,...?) Behind a snap in pad, inside the helmet.
Many take the helmet with them or lock it on the bike, etc., so no tools etc. needed to get at the spare.
I have had a few things stolen off the bike, but not yet heard of a SMELLY helmet being stolen.
(thou I'm sure it also has been done.)
And if helmet is LOCKED on the bike, and if keys lost or stolen, (In tank bag, coat, etc?) just pop out the pad.
NOW If someone could  just come up with a way to remind me, where all my stash places are. LOL
Mark (West Mich.)
