Hey Y'all
I was talking to a guy today that was saying the DRZ650 is a twin, and there for, much smooooother on the highway.
TOPIC: I was talking about getting (ADDING) a Vstrom 650 for trips that I "PLAN" on being 80-100% pavement (mild dirt roads) and a 100 ++ miles away. (& freeways)
But said there was NO-way I am getting rid of my KLR. When he suggested the DRZ650
Being ALOT like the KLR but smoother.

Mark,
While i agree on having a 2nd bike - been looking into a used V-Strom 1000 myself - I'll take my KLR over the DR.
Ridden both at length and did not notice one smoother over another. The DR gets points for tighter turns and perhaps better dirt play, but on trips gets piping hot between the family jewels. Both are very reliable but i like liquid-cooled personally and KLR's get the edge on maintenance where they can take on more cross-functional elements when needed from other bikes. Just one man's opinion.

There is a Suzuki DL650, the 650cc V-Strom. The little V-Strom (“Wee-Strom) is a great bike on-road but not nearly as much of an “all-around” bike as the KLR since it lacks the KLR’s off-road ability. I’ve put 60K miles on Wees between the two I’ve owned. This bike is a V-twin. I’ve taken mine into KLR country on many occasions and both the bike and I have the scars to prove it. The bike is very smooth on the highway and loves to rev,the Wee is very much still on the powerband at 7K RPM. Suzuki also makes a DR650, which is an air/oil cooled 650cc single. It’s at least as good as the KLR off-road but is not as nice of a long-haul bike as the KLR. It’s also has a tiny stock tank and not a lot of options for fitting luggage. But the bike is easier to lower than the KLR and thus is quite popular as a dual sport for inseam-challenged riders. AFAIK Suzuki does NOT make a DRZ650….but if they did it would probably be a 650cc water-cooled single according their existing model naming conventions. There is DRZ400 in the Suzuki dual sport lineup. The DRZ400 is a much better off-roader than the KLR. The DRZ has more power, a much better stock suspension and is lighter than the KLR. Unlike the KLR the DRZ is easy to hop-up: Yoshimura helped Suzuki with the engine design and it’s easy to get 45hp at the rear wheel out of the engine or more if you have more money than moderation and chose to build a $3K stroker engine for it. But the DRZ is not nearly as good of an all-around bike as the KLR since the little DRZ is not much of a highway bike and lacks the payload capability to be a great “adventure touring” mount. It's a DR650SE, there is no DRZ650. It's also a single, not a twin. So
whoever you were talking to has no idea what they're talking about.

The DR650's a single.
The DL650's a L twin (not to be confused with a V twin).
One'll take you to and down most any fire road around.
The other will take you across country without parts of your anatomy screaming in anger.
=)
