ims fuel tank

Just went to the IMS websight and to my surprise the fuel tank that used to be listed for the KLR appears to be no more. Could it be that IMS is no longer making them for the KLR? Did I miss my opportunity to buy one? Anybody have any info?

Don't give up, call. For some reason IMS doesn't list the military tank on their web site. Years ago I had to call to order mine. Apparently things haven't changed. --- In DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com, "paul papavero" wrote:

I've never seen it listed on their web site, even back when I bought mine. You'll need to check with IMS dealers to see whether they can get it or not. IMS has had some capacity issues in the past, because the military has been soaking up so much of their production capacity for KLR gas tanks. I suspect this explains why they don't actually advertise it, they don't want to disappoint customers who want the tank but can't get it due to the production capacity issues. And if you wonder why IMS isn't adding more capacity, such a question shows an ignorance of how military procurement works. The landscape is littered with the ruined corpses of companies who added more capacity to meet military orders then went bankrupt when the military orders dried up and they had all this debt for expanding capacity lying around... -E

Never had any fuel boiling in the IMS tank that I know of. It is translucent and one would think I would see the bubble or smell the boiling vapors from the vent hose. I would think metal being a better heat conductor than say plastic the chances of boiling fuel in the stock metal tank would be better than boiling fuel in a plastic IMS tank? JF

Trail riding in the Everglades and slid thru a muddy patch into the back of my buddy's V-Strom. His exhaust took out my gas tank. Thinking of going with the IMS 6.6 gallon plastic replacement from Rocky Mtn. for $247.00. Any experience, ideas, warnings, advice would be appreciated.

I've put 35k miles or so on said tank. I like it much better if you go down. I hated those goofy shrouds. However are you dependent on tank bags ? I am on a light bike it's important to have as much weight as possible forward. The IMS vents with a rubber tube from the gas cap dirt bike style. Not good for putting the tank bag on top. I modified the cap so that the vertical tubing out of the cap and the first few inches when it turns horizontal is metal. Now my Wolfman rests happily. I love my IMS tank, it's the translucent green and I can see the gas level thru the tank walls. Fred sells an Acerbis locking cap that has built in vents without a hose coming out of the top. ________________________________ From: Bogdan Swider To: ALFRED ; "DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com" DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com> Sent: Tuesday, January 22, 2013 12:46 PM Subject: Re: [DSN_KLR650] IMS Fuel Tank I've put 35k miles or so on said tank.
