I ended up in a 6 foot deep ditch with the bike on top of me such that I couldn't get traction to lever the bike off me. The rock was placed in the trail to keep cars out since the rail trail crossed a provincial highway at that location. The crash was luckily witnessed by a passing motorist who stopped and extricated me from my sodden and rather smelly resting place. Good thing he did since the trail was lightly traveled in that area and I was far enough below trail grade to be invisible. Lesson learned: pannier symmetry is more important that absolute width, I misjudged the clearance since the muffler-side pannier protruded further from the bike centerline than the left side. All of my pannier-equipped bikes since have been symmetrical within a half-inch. With symmetric panniers narrower than the handle bar width its easier to thread through obstructions. -----Original Message----- From: "eddie" Sent: 12/ 4/ 2012 13:58 To: "DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com" DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com> Subject: [DSN_KLR650] Moto-Mishap - NKLR Check out the footage of a moto-mishap.......... silly Frenchmen http://www.grindtv.com/outdoor/blog/43989/motorcycle+journalist+crashes+on+dock+falls+10-plus+feet+into+sailboat/ There is a lesson in this for us who use saddle bags (in my case Pelican's)- they stick out and if you are not careful you might go sailing.
