Hi, My name is eddie. I've been a list member for three years and I've been seduced by the dark side of the force. I sold my KLR650 this week and bought a black 2012 Yamaha XT1200 Super T n r . So much for "simple motorcycle" ownership. ;-) Mind if I hang around the list? You folks are terrific! - eddie in Columbus Ga. [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

You must certainly stay, Eddie, but you must start all your posts with "Although my opinions are neither logical nor sane, since I sold my KLR and bought a Tenere".... Biggie CONGRATS Eddie! And since we've already talked about my being interested in an ST, I expect to hear about all the good/bad/ugly from you before I jump off the deep end myself. "Although my opinions are neither logical nor sane, since I sold my KLR and bought a Tenere".... =) (Thanks, Randy for the congrats! ) XT1200 1st impressions. The good: * The ins. for good coverage from State Farm was only about $10 more a month than the 09' KLR650. Are ABS and traction control to tank? Dunno. * Although it's only got about 260 miles on it as of this email, the 1st tank of gas yielded an average of 48.1 mpg as indicated by the NASA inspired multi-function display. It also gives on-the-fly mpg #s, too. Steady cruising around 60mph in 6th gear will net 50-55mpg. The figure drops on uphills, naturally. But, it's fun to watch the downhills at the same speed display 70-80mpg!! With a fuel tank a hair bigger than the KLR's , it's a relief that the XT1200 doesn't get the advertised 39mpg. Maybe once the break in period is over and I can play a little harder will the actual numbers reveal themselves. * Shaft drive. No more chain lube! Enough said. * Handlebars as big as Texas. Leverage! * Tubeless spoked wheels in common sizes. Nifty! * The bike's comfortable for my 5'8", 30" inseam self to get feet down a little better at stops. Thank the adjustable seat. It's a good thing, too. The bike weighs almost 200# more than the KLR. But, you really don't notice it. Just stay out of the woods. On the highway, this thing loafs along at 3k rpm @60mph all day. It's a comfortable cruiser in disguise. * Valve inspections are every 26,600 miles. * The oil filter and drain bolts (yes, 2/plural) are right there to be accessed. Why two drains? One's for the crankcase and the other for the built-in dry sump reservoir. I read the instructions. Oil changes are a non-event. Unlike some KTMs. The bad: * Mine's black. Try keeping that much black clean. Geez. * It's heavy. So, don't drop it. If you do, hope you bought a set of crash bars. I priced a side panel and they aren't bad (under $150 per). Still, it's gonna hit hard no matter what. * It takes premium fuel. Good thing it sips it sparingly. * A replacement battery costs as much as a good set of KLR tires (or more!). The ugly: If you disn't like Star Wars, the "Darth Vader's hot rod" comments it draws will get old. Me? I'm currently trying to figure out how to mount a D.V. Pez head on the bike as a mascot! LOL I just bought it Tuesday. So, I'll get back with ya'll about the long term stuff another time. eddie

Sounds nifty Eddie....but who cruises at 60 mph? That will get you run over where I live. 75-80 mph on my old KLR is the norm for me. The adjustable seat sounds good. The two drain plugs I guess are like my 2001 Concours....ah which I forgot about....and waaay overfilled the oil and rode that way a while. It didn't seem to hurt it. 26,000 on valve adjust is a plus....it's a twin correct? I would have bought one but the 200 pounds more than the KLR scared me away. I don't really want my do it all bike any heavier than a KLR. Criswell Sent from my iPad

dark side of the force. 60mph

Post by Eddie » Sun Sep 09, 2012 7:38 am

Agree with ya' there. I'm constantly looking in my mirrors for overtakers. The 60mph figure keeps me within the break-in limits and I've been trying to keep to back roads vs. highway droning, too. Once the run-in's complete, I'll feel safer. I had a 2002 DL1000 for almost 6 years. While on paper nearly 100# lighter than the Yamaha, I really have a hard time feeling the difference between the two. The XT feels a little more "planted" on the road. Heft has it's advantages some times, I guess. I took it out for a 10 mile loop last night with my girlfriend on the back. She's around 165-175# and the bike didn't ride all that differently. The parallel twin is a torque monster and pulled us both with ease. Again, if off highway riding involves anything more than a good dirt road, the KLR is a better bike for that stuff. While it's capable of more than that, I still wouldn't want to have something go wrong and have to pick up the 1200. I tried righting a R1100GS from a tipover one time and had to have help. eddie PS: Odd Yamaha trivia. The new bike has twin projector beam headlights that are illuminated all the time. They use single filament H7 halogen bulbs. Which begs the question: How does high/low beam work? There's a servo inside the headlamp that moves a metal shield-like thing over the bulbs partially for low beam. Flick on high and you can hear(engine off) a camera shutter-like "click" sound as it moves out of the way. At night you can just make out the movement in the light ahead as it does so, too. Oh! Speaking of bulbs. I have never had a bike with ones so easy to change. You could do it while seated on the bike! There's a 1/4 turn, o-ring sealed plastic cover visible behind each lamp. Remove them and there are the bulbs with familiar wire clip retainers. No tools. No busted knuckles!

Eddie, Does anybody make "frame sliders" for it? You don't need crash bars if you aren't crashing into rocks. Just the sliders will keep the bodywork off the blacktop. Just a thought. Also wide bars do that pretty good too. My KLR handgrips are trashed on the end from dropping it.
