I picked up a reasonably priced Uni two stage foam filter + their oil &
cleaner from a local shop.
The foam seems sturdier than OEM and I always have the original as a spare.
Like Chris wrote below, I'm not a fan of K&N air filters - especially after
reading on a ST1100 related site
about a mining company that experimented with them once and the amount of
dirt that got through was massive vs. the stock filters.

are cloth filters. Notoil, bel ray... are for foam filters and that is what
you need.

Hi John,
Did you use a KHI manual description when you did the compression check?
Just asking--The bike has a compression release on the #1 cylinder to aid in starting the bike with a smaller battery and starter.
Unless the compression release is disabled, you will have a low compression, especially on the #1 cylinder.
On the other hand, if you did follow the procedure, correctly, it is known the early 2008's had issues with the rings, specifically in oil consumption.

Might be worth remembering the KLR650 has a compression release on the
right exhaust valve. 50 PSI is a bit low but still probably not a valid
test.
Of course since it's an 08 it could be a cylinder out of round or rings
that are not touching the cylinder.
Where did the leakdown test show the leak?

#1 Cylinder?
Does it have more hiding in there somewhere that I'm not aware of?

I have found that the #2, #3 and #4 cylinders do not contribute much to
the performance of the bike.
