stiff links in chain

Post by Chris » Mon Nov 14, 2011 1:14 pm

My KLRs chain has some stiff links, and I've started getting an odd "thrumming" sound and feel around 55mph. Are the stiff links the end of the chain? It is [was] a good o-ring chain, lubed and cleaned. Can/should the chain be resurrected? It's only got about 10,000 miles on it, but most of that is unpaved. thanks, Chris

<><><><><><> <><><><><><> Chris, That's the beginning of the end of the chain. Keep an eye on the chain adjustment and when it needs adjustment every 300-500 miles it's about gone. Might be worth exploring what deals you can find on chains and sprockets so you're ready when the time to replace yours arrives. It won't be long. Here's a pretty good deal on Ebay for a DID 520 gold Xring chain. $85 including shipping (120 links). I'm told these are the best chains money can buy. http://www.ebay.com/itm/DID-520-VM-X-Ring-Gold-Dirtbike-Motorcycle-Chain-/130601527911?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&vxp=mtr&hash=item1e68752a67#ht_500wt_1315 I've read some good reviews on this brand: Primary Drive, which is a Rocky Mount ATV/MC brand. $56.54 plus shipping for the right length (106 links). I'm thinking of trying this for my next chain. What could possibly go wrong? http://www.rockymountainatvmc.com/productDetail.do;jsessionid=D210918EDD6B69E3141EC5AB6AB89A7D?navTitle=Drive&webCatId=9&navType=type&webTypeId=36&prodFamilyId=2083&listingId=&sizeAttr=456 -David ________________________________ From: Jeff Saline To: 0404toward@... vendor - klr650 - few parts you should have consider

I have the Jakeman carb tool, too, rattling around in a tool roll or the bottom of a tool bag somewhere. When I could no longer find it, I made a functional replacement by cutting down an Apex bit and slipping a quarter inch of 6mm fuel line over the end. That one's in the pouch of another tool roll, in company with a BMW alternator pulling pin, another tool that like the carb tool does not get much use and that is easily replicated at home, maybe not so easily on the road.
