On Friday I will embarking on a 1500-1600 mile, 8 day, ride through Oregon, Nevada, and California. I used wear a back support for long rides like the employees at Home Depot wear. It's a topic we haven't covered in a long time. Any thoughts and/or preferences? I'll be abusing my back falling timber up until the day of the ride. I really want to be comfortable during the 2 days I plan on riding 500+ miles.

kidney belt/back brace
Three words of advice........ practice, practice & practice.
Take lots of short/mid length rides to get your body used to longer rides. The longer you ride the easier it becomes. If you can pack a sleeping bag or some other support behind your lower back, that might help too. Some may advise taking Ibuprofen or some other types of drugs but that also has side effects. Take lots of rest-breaks and drink lots of water. A wider seat helps also either a sheep skin or those wooden bead covers help air circulation. Highway pegs will give you a place to stretch out your legs a bit. Gel grips help if you have vibration or tingling in the hands. A better/taller windshield helps keep the wind from beating you up. Stay off the interstates........... You may cover more miles but you will be less comfortable doing it. An Evaporative Cooling Vest really helps when it is hot.

mileage on a klr
My 2007 has 95,000 miles and is still starting and running fine. It sounds jangly and worn coming down the street, and I just bought a low mileage 2005 to replace it, so I guess I'm not waiting for the big implosion. I'll switch over the touring parts (guards, horn, fuses, luggage racks, etc.) before trying to sell or trade it...or just keep it in the garage for parts.
I've been trying to take care of the bike, but I'm sure not fussy. Most of the miles were in Europe (Ever pay US$50 per liter for oil? I have: in Norway and Sweden), North Africa, a bit of Asia, plus North, Central and South America. Sometimes I used parts from unrelated bikes because that was all I could find. Oil changes were frequent but often involved no-name oil with dubious ratings. The doohickey went back around 12,000 and was fixed under warranty with OEM parts, and the replacement doohickey was already broken when I had it replaced with Eagle Mike parts around 20,000. Since then: valve adjustments, cables, a shock and muffler, brakes and a LOT of tires, chains and sprockets. Still has the original seat, still the same inadequate lights, still stopping when I request that it do so using the same old brakes.
I don't think I've done anything too remarkable, since I see other KLR's out there on the roads looking and sounding much like mine. Probably there are a few around which have broken 100k, although I've not seen one personally.
