I've seen various threads on re-jetting carbs and such, but I've owned several bikes and none of them have ever had a problem running until you get above 12,000 feet or more.
This bike runs great just the way it is, it just has a hard time starting, I'm thinking it has more to do w/ it doing some kind of vapor locking. Can the fuel boil off in the float chamber or something when it's been run hard and then it sits for awhile?
Those are great pics John,
Rick

The difficulty you describe is not at all common. The KLR s CV carb is almost immune to elevation changes.
Mine has started instantly and reliably in elevations ranging from 271 feet *below* sea level
see http://johnbiccum.smugmug.com/Motorcycles/Death-Valley-2006/1169681_EeRNa#54669736_9x5q8 ) to 12,119 feet *above* sea level, see http://johnbiccum.smugmug.com/Motorcycles/Seattle-to-Denver/17824820_JxGFnq#1383881312_S2SjFdf
I m not sure if *you* have a problem but the bike definitely has a problem!

I was riding up in the mountains the other day, on highway, and after every stop I'd have to run the starter for about a minute on full choke to get the bike started.
I went from 6000ft to 9500ft and I had it loaded w/ my camping gear, combined weight of 274lbs.
Is that pretty common or is there a problem?
Thanks,
Rick

I am thinking something like that also.. Thinking cooler temps, did'nt say how much fuel you had at the time, or how long the bike sat cooling. But popping the cap open would'nt hurt if your not sure the vent is working. Not sure how much contraction chilled vs heated fuel there is but my plastic gas cans expand and contract alot, vent has to work both ways.
Little insects love little holes... plucked many a larve things mudded into the cooling water discharge port on outboards.
I would also just open the airbox, pull filter and give it a visual, then maybe pull plug to check color and toss in a new one for good measure.
Good Luck

I'm starting to think the same thing, I changed the petcock diaphram recently and saved the old one. I'm going to modify it and convert the petcock to a gravity feed. Also I'll remove the petcock and lower the level of the main tank screen, (the Hurricane Mod). And at the same time I'll check the carb float level to make sure it's okay.
The bike is laid up anyway as I'm waiting for the doohickey parts to arrive:)
At night I'm continuing to pack my gear for my first trip, I'm getting a bad case of camping fever:)
I'll let you know how it all goes,
Rick

Rick,
Are you saying that with your stock petcock, you don't have a "gravity feed"?

Yes, it is apparently easily damaged, I managed not to break mine. Can't
remember just how but be careful.

Should you take the choke cable off the carb to do it? if so, how does one
do it?
