<><><><><><><> <><><><><><><> Jeffrey #3, I haven't done this to a header pipe but have used this procedure on some other very rusty parts. Use a battery charger to remove the rust. Here's how. You'll need a nonconductive (plastic or rubber) container large enough to hold the pipe. Fill it with water and add a teaspoon of baking soda for each gallon of water. You'll also need a piece of scrap metal, sheet metal works well and the more surface area the better with in reason. Clip the negative lead of the battery charger to the header pipe. Clip the positive lead to the scrap metal. Submerge both pieces in the container and don't let them touch. Make sure the parts don't touch!!! Plug in the battery charger. The higher the amperage the better, again within reason. Ten amps isn't too much. The water will probably bubble a bit and that will let you know the process is working. The rust will move from the header to the scrap metal. Turn off the battery charger before removing the parts from the solution. You might have to wipe or lightly wire brush the header to remove some rust residue. If it's not clean in the first go let it work a bit longer. Depending on the amount of rust and the battery charger and size of parts it could take all day. But maybe check every couple of hours. Let us know how it works if you decide to use this. I've always just used Naval Jelly.

When you're done with the steps listed, spray it down with simple green or another very high pH cleaner to neutralize the last bit of the acid contained in the Naval Jelly. Then paint it with that awesome flat black barbecue paint.
That's how I would do it anyway...
