anybody done the 685cc or 705cc mod?

Post by John Biccum » Sun Jun 19, 2011 8:54 pm

The bike had 33,695 miles on it when the OEM piston cracked and the 685 kit was installed. It had 39,020 miles when the OEM valves were replaced. So 5,325 miles between. But I was chasing valve adjustments for hundreds of miles before that. At one point I adjusted the valves to max clearance then rode a loop of 285 miles. The following morning the valve clearances were rechecked. I found the two intake valves were on the minimum and the two exhausts were under minimum clearance. In 285 miles! The dyno results on my bike suggest that the oversize valves contributed as much to the performance improvement as did the extra 34cc of displacement. I'd certainly recommend doing both when you are inside the engine. The only additional labor cost will be for the head work. The only additional parts cost will be for the new valves and guides. Neither parts are expensive. -----Original Message----- From: DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com [mailto:DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com] On Behalf Of David H. I've been reading all I can find on the web about the 685 and 705 and while many people recommend getting the head done, I haven't found anybody who's mentioned the valve failure after upgrade. How many miles did your original valves have on them? It seems to me that if I'm going to the trouble and expense of doing this upgrade (including the head upgrade), it makes more sense to go with the 705 for just a few hundred more. Everybody I've heard from or read about who's actually done the conversion seems to really love it (685 and 705). Thanks for the heads up. It has been trouble free for more than 25K miles now.. Here are the dyno results: http://johnbiccum.smugmug.com/Motorcycles/KLR685-dyno/1198525_UFLYW#87767369 _AGnfu Note that there is no "stock" dyno run. The first run is with the 685 piston and stock valves the second run is with the 685 and the oversize valves. I'd do the valves when you are inside the engine, my stock valves failed (tuliped) just 5K miles after fitting the 685 piston. Been reading up on the 685cc and 7065cc mods from Schnitz/Mtech. Sound interesting. Anybody done one of these? What results are you seeing? Thanks.
