David, My guess is low fuel with your bike caused the issue. : ) I'm guessing that if you put in a gallon of fuel it will run fine for about a gallon's worth of use. Then it will do the same thing again. It would be pretty easy to check. My experience is different KLRs react to fuel level changes differently. Some with a fuel filter never have issues and some have the same type fuel filter installed the same way and have issues when the fuel reaches a certain level.
