[norton antispam] [dsn_klr650] klr and the msf

I was riding my 2006 KLR off road. Cool day in the 60s. Pretty rough area, even on the cool day the fan was on a lot. Main fuel supply ran out, switched to reserve, rode another 10 minutes. Stopped to talk to some other guys for about 10 minutes on the way out. Started back up, 50-55 mph for about 3 miles. Bike started cutting out, just like running out of gas, worse and worse over about 20 seconds till it died. I run a clear fuel line and filter, see gas there, looks fine. Crank on the starter, nothing. Do this a few times over the next 5 minutes, nothing. Call the wife to bring the truck and loading ramp. While waiting, looking bike over for any thing amiss, nothing obvious. After about 15 minutes I think gas in the line, no start, maybe a stuck float. I rap on the float bowl a few times. Hit the starter and it starts. Ride it home another 4 miles, no problem. Easy answer is stuck float but I'm not sure. Float unsticks after hitting the carb but still dry until bike is cranked, right? Bike starts up quick, not sure the float bowl would have filled up that quick. Any other guesses on what caused it to quit? Any suspected electrical gremlins - sensors or relays going bad, etc. Bike has sidestand and clutch bypass and in any event I was starting in neutral. Thanks David

Possibly a bit of water in the gas tank got in the carb? Just a thought. Maybe, eventually, it got out of wherever was making your bike fail to run and all is well. :-\ eddie

Any chance the tank vent is clogged or covered? I kinda had the same thing happen to me and found my tank bag covered the vent hole. Gary Souderton, Pa. Two more things to try: Drain the float bowl, to rule out moisture accumulation. Check that the carb vent hose is not blocked. It can suck up wet road spooge, get fouled on the shock spring or melt shut on the muffler. Search on "T-mod" for one palliative.

Now would be an excellent time to add 6oz of Seafoam to the bike and a full tank of gas. Additionally, I would drain the fuel bowl by removing the little drain-plug-bolt with a(3mm?/4mm)allen wrench. While the plug is out, purge the fuel bowl. How? Make sure the fuel is on, place a rag where the fuel will plunge/drain out. Crank the bike for a moment to fully flush out the fuel bowl. Let the fuel drain out completely. Inspect the gas-stained rag for bubbles = water, and debris = debris Replace the drain plug. NOTE: If the fuel continues to run out, long after the starter has stopped, you petcock diaphragm is kau-putt; it has now become a manual petcock and is not shutting off the fuel unless the petcock is switched OFF. Of course, safety glasses and a stone cold bike is preferred. NOTE: If the vacuum petcock system is operating correctly, the fuel will give a pretty good squirt out the drain hole, so don't be 'looking' at the exit port when you push the starter button. revmaaatin.

I told her yes and she showed my GA license and it's Class CM endorsement. Then she suprised me by showing me her GA license with a CM endorsement, also. For unknown reasons we'll never know, she somehow moved from Boston to Birmingham and then to Columbus Georgia and along the way she got a motorcycle license without ever having been on a bike in her life.
