front wheel replacement?

Post by Dirk Beer » Thu Sep 09, 2010 2:25 pm

Just found out the front rim on my 2004 KLR650 is cracked, I guess from a recent rough weekend at Big Bear. A new rim from Kawasaki is over $200. Does anyone have any suggestions on where I could find a cheaper replacement rim (or preferably, a whole wheel)? Thanks, Dirk

#ygrps-yiv-1919139649 p {margin:0;}You can get a new Excel Takasago rim for around $120.00 (Excel makes the stock rim) and lace it yourself.  The size is 21x1.60 36H.  Plus, you'd get to learn a new skill. -Jeff Khoury

#ygrps-yiv-1862621218 p {margin:0;}P.S.  I re-read your post and noticed you're in So. Cal.  If you want to stop by the house, I can show you how to lace and true your wheel.  I'll instruct and drink beer, and you can do the work. :-) -Jeff Khoury

Thanks, Jeff! I'll check those and the Excel ones out. May also look for a used one but haven't had much luck so far.DirkSan Diego

Dirk, Did the wheel break at the weld or perhaps the valve stem hole? Is it a hairline crack or a full blown seam splitter? Before my son and I did our jaunt this summer, we carefully washed, yes, washed each wheel clean and looked for such damage--finding none. Wheels, etc: I bought a full set of wheels delivered for ~$380ish. an ebay purchase from a scrapper. Many run as much as $500. shug. I would watch for a low mileage wheel--vs a manymile wheel, etc. Used wheels can be a coin toss; ?? is there a hidden cost??, etc. One had a usable disc brake, (smile) one did not. (frown) All bearing were usable. (smile) I have them skinned in a D607 (90/10) street tire for the times I am going long distance with little or no chance of mud. (big smiles) revmaaatin. after reading your report, thinks it would good idea to inspect the wheels again since the ride.

revmaaatin,
>Did the wheel break at the weld or perhaps the valve stem hole? > Is it a hairline crack or a full blown seam splitter? It is a ~12" crack right along the center of the rim where the spokes attach. Nowhere near the stem hole. It's definitely bigger than hairline. The guys at the shop where I was having the tire changed say it is the biggest crack they've ever seen. Don't know if it happened solely during my weekend off-road ride, or whether it started as a fatigue crack. I have done a lot of high-speed highway riding, so I wonder if that contributed. Good advice regarding used rims, and you are right, I definitely will start checking my rims carefully before/after rides - I never thought something like this was possible! Dirk

Dirk, Thanks for that description. I am now even more keen to do that inspection--between the spokes. I had been looking 'closely' at the edges during a tire change; I will look closely at the gaps between the spokes. Just curious-- 1.were there any broken spokes 2. have you been flying this bike. smile. = hard impacts following moments of accelerated gravatational experiments revmaaatin.

I may have a rim from a 2001 KLR.   I removed it from a hub that I was converting to a 17"er.
