inexpensive solution for no centerstand?

Post by jpod@sbcglobal.net » Sun Jul 25, 2010 12:02 pm

I hate not having a centerstand on my '09, but don't want to spend $140 plus on an aftermarket one. Does anyone have a good, inexpensive workaround solution? Aerostich has an external jack stand, but it won't work on KLRs. Thanks, John

Attachments :Do you just want something to get the wheel off the ground to lube the chain or clean the rim? This is not a good idea for much of anything else. But, on previous dual sport bikes without a center stand, I carried a length of PVC pipe about 1.5 - 2 in. in diameter. The pipe was cut with a slight notch in one end to help it stay on the swing arm end & the overall length was just barely long enough to hold the wheel off the ground when placed vertically between the swingarm and the ground. To use it, I tied off the front brake lever with a bandana or whatever I had handy to keep the bike from rolling. Next, I *carefully* pushed up on the rear rack and leaned the bike left on the kickstand so I could position the pipe under the swingarm. Again, for anything more than cleaning the wheel or lubing the chain, you'd want something more stable. But, this cheap {free?} "stand" served well. I found the attached old picture of a Transalp with the "stand" visible on the rear pack. eddie
