aftermarket stator for the klr650

Post by klr_a4 » Thu Apr 29, 2010 6:12 am

Hi, My '93 KLR 650h as given up the go....looks like it's the stator or CDI box. What's the latest consensus on the Electrex stator - is it reliable? Any other aftermarket stators? Also are there any aftermarket or reconditioned CDI boxes available? Before the bike finally died , the electrical system was in steady decline, as the battery would hold a charge indefinitely while parked, but on long rides the battery would appear to be discharged. Thanks everyone. Any input on pros/cons of aftermarket vs. OEM stator would be appreciated. Please reply to the entire list. Conall 93, 95 KLR650

aftermarket stator for the klr650

Post by klr_a4 » Thu Apr 29, 2010 3:07 pm

The KLR cranks over fine, but it's not firing. Diagnostic points to the stator. My specific concern was how reliable is the Electrex stator that is available on the aftermarket? Thanks everyone. Conall

aftermarket stator for the klr650

I used to sell these and if you want to rank these as ten being very reliable and zero being totally unreliable, I'd have to say that the Electrosport stator is about a two or three.  I had a 3/4 failure rate on the ones I sold and the Electrosport was terrible to deal with on warranty replacements, so Caveat emptor. aftermarket stator for the klr650

Post by klr_a4 » Thu Apr 29, 2010 5:42 pm

Thanks Fred, I did notice the aftermarket stator was not on arrowhead's parts page. Further research show Electrexworld.co.uk and electrosport US have very similar part numbers for the KLR650 stator , so I'm 99% sure the parts are one and the same. I think I'll go with a OEM stator.Wish me luck it's not the CDI. Conall

aftermarket stator for the klr650

Post by Fred Hink » Thu Apr 29, 2010 6:00 pm

Before you spend your money, you can easily check your stator to see if it is good.  Check the resistance through each yellow wire to yellow wire and yellow wire to ground.  If you have different readings from each of the three windings in the yellow wires, that would be your problem.  If they all read the same, then it should be good if none of them are shorted to ground.  If you decide you need a new stator, I can get you any OEM parts.   I don't know if you remember Electrex a while back.  Electrex was run in the US by a guy from England.  Electrex changed it's name to Electrosport and I believe the same guy is running it now.
