My own preference is for thermarest brand because I've found them more reliable, lighter and more compact than others available in my neighborhood. The only true failures I've had--which means failures which can't be patched using their included patch kit--have been with off-brands. That doesn't mean I get offended if someone tells me I'd be better off shopping Wal-mart or Cabela's. Nor does it suggest I get all huffy if I ask for a link and am instead told I'm morally bankrupt for even considering such a thing. I try to save that sort of reactivity for really important stuff, like whether I'd have been better off with BMW after all. Hope this contributes in some way.
