rear bulb question - tail light

Post by eddiebmauri » Tue Mar 30, 2010 8:27 pm

Y'all, on the way home tonight I got stopped by the police, it seems that my tail light is out, but my brake light worked. The P.O. did not give me a ticket, but he said to get it fixed, no kidding. Now, I am no mechanic, so my question is, "is it one bulb in there?" I am going to review the Clymer Manual tonight, but you all are my first go to (for info). I assume that this is a simple as fixing/replacing one bulb? And, I plan to buy the bulb at the local Kawa dealer, or is there a replacement bulb that will work just as well? Bear with me, I am no mechanic, and this is my first bit of research. Why does the brake light work and not the running light? And, I thank you all for any info. Eddie (03' KLR 650 - "la poderosa")

rear bulb question - tail light

Post by Jeff Saline » Tue Mar 30, 2010 8:50 pm

Eddie, It's a single bulb. You should be able to pick it up at any auto parts store or maybe even a Walmart. I just took a look in the Clymers and it says the 2001 and on taillight/brake lite bulb is 12 volt, 5/21 watts. It didn't list a bulb number. My suggestion is to go to an auto parts store and remove the tail light lens. Push in on the bulb and turn it counterclockwise maybe an 1/8 turn. Then it should pull right out. Hang onto the bulb and look at the tits on the sides. One is near the glass and the other is nearer the base. It will only go back in one way. The side of the bulb might say what number it is. Ask the counter guy to help you select the correct bulb and if you have problems putting it back in ask for help with that too. Normally they are happy to show you how to do simple stuff like that. To put the bulb back in put the tits in the same position as how they were when you took the other one out. Then just put it into the slots and push till it bottoms and turn it clockwise about 1/8 turn. Let it go and it should stay in place and be firm. Then test it before you reinstall the lens. The reason the brake light worked and not the tail light is the bulb has two filaments inside. It's like two bulbs inside one. The filament for the tail light is broken and doesn't conduct electrickery any more. The brake light filament is working fine still. Well, having said all this about the bulb. This is all assuming it's the bulb and not a wiring or some other issue. If the bulb doesn't fix it let us know and maybe the list can help you figure out what's what. #ygrps-yiv-352858222 p {margin:0;}Also, if you want it to be brighter, and never burn out again, replace it with a superbright LED bulb.  I got mine from http://autolumination.com/1156_1157.htm .  I prefer the "Eagle Eye 5". -Jeff Khoury Astatic Solutions, LLC.

Attachments : I would recommend a LED tail light. They're a few bucks, but won't burn out as often. I was loosing one every couple of months (too fast on crappy dirt roads), until I replaced mine with a LED tail light 5 years ago. eddiebmauri wrote:

rear bulb question - tail light

LED's would be good as the wife has been complaining about the heat from the 100W bulb. As I am older I need the light in order to see where the hell I am cause I don't want to go too far!
