leaking fuel tap, and overflowing carb

hi all just took my 1989 klr650 out for an engish winter hack , only to find the the fuel tap leaking and the carb over flowing, i was able to ride the bike back as long as i kept the rev's up. would a leaking fuel tap effect the carb , making it overflow? many thanks sean

Maybe trash in both the float needle and the petcock? If so, might have rust or other junk from the tank interior. Should be a screen in the feed to the petcock, might be time to drain it all and clean it up. Do you have a see thru filter on the line, it's a great diagnostic tool!
