Greetings, all, and particularly all in the Seattle area. I have a rather
unorthodox Vendor Friday posting:
Tilted Thunder Rail Birds (tiltedthunder.com) is a new banked-track roller
derby league forming in the Seattle area. (All of the other area leagues
are flat-track.) The skaters are in training as they raise money to build
the track, and are looking for dedicated volunteers (male or female) for
certain tasks:
-Skating Referees, and Non-Skating Officials. No experience required,
just an interest. There is a new ref orientation this Saturday
(tomorrow), at 3:30 in Broadview; attending doesn't commit you to
volunteering.
-Coaches. The skaters need experienced coaches for training and
conditioning, and strategy. Obviously, there probably isn't anyone with
prior _derby_ experience, but any sports requiring endurance and agility
should cross over well. I'd estimate collegiate level as appropriate.
They're also looking for sponsors, if you work for or own a business that
might be interested. I'm volunteering as a ref and track builder. I was
a Track Monkey for the LA Derby Dolls for about 1.5 years (dated a ref,
hung out with them a lot), and you can visit derbydolls.com/la/ to see
what it's all about, and even watch the archived webcast from the last
bout. Unlike old roller derby, this is a real sport. The skaters pay
dues to be in the league and cover costs, and they skate hard to get their
money's worth. They are a great bunch of people to hang out and work
with. Current practices are in Ballard, I believe. You even get to come
up with your own funny name.
Contact me at ckrok at bigcee dot com if you're interested, and I'll give
you details on the ref orientation and/or e-mail contact info for the TTRB
recruiter as appropriate. There will be another ref orientation in the
future if you can't make this one.
Thanks for the bandwidth,
El Krokko
aka Jackson Polack, RIP'56
(p.s. If your main interest is in DATING a derby girl, don't volunteer;
come to pub night instead.)
