Has anyone here on the list used this product and care to offer a review?
Claims to be 280W.
Other attempts during the past 6 years of increased elec power outputs have had mixed results, thought I would ask if anyone has field tested this one.

I worked with ElectroSport to develop this stator and I have not heard anything good about the results. This eBay ad from a dealer says it is from Moose but I will bet that ElectroSport is the manufacturer and Moose is putting their name on this item. The dealer's "Buy Now" price is the regular suggested list price. I can sell these all day at this price but I refuse to sell a product that has major problems and has not been proven. If this stator isn't faulty right out of the box, you have a very good reason to believe it will fail soon. My last order with ElectroSport had 8 out of 12 fail right out of the box or very soon after installation. ElectroSport denied that there was any problems with this new stator. The company gave me the run-around and took many many months to refund those that were defective. I have since returned all my stock and refuse to sell anything from ElectroSport. Stators as I understand how they work can only produce so much current. High output stators take away the charging at low speeds to add it at higher speeds. So if you are trail riding or slow street riding, your high output stator will actually be putting out less than the stock stator. Stator output is rated at or nearly at redline of the engine. Who rides their bikes at redline all the time? You can't beat the stock stator for reliability. Being stuck along the side of the road in the dark with no charging system is not a good experience.

Fred,
Last Spring when I needed a new stator I was in my buddy's shop when the Parts Unlimited rep was there. I asked him about the current 280 watt from Moose and he said he hadn't seen defective returns. He assured me that if it failed that the shop could return it for credit so I went ahead and ordered it. I've had it for about 7 months and 8k miles with no problem. Running the stock RR. One interesting thing is that at 1800-2000 rpms I get a charging voltage of 13.5 volts+ with my 100 watt headlight on high. Above 2500 rpm the charging voltage drops to just over 13 volts and stays there as rpm's climb. I have a spare RR and when I swapped them the voltages stayed the same. I've been meaning to put an amp meter on it to see what charging current I'm getting but since my battery is being maintained at 12.6+volts and my volt meter never shows a low charging voltage I'm not too concerned. I agree about the customer service at ES, my email about charging voltage was never answered and a voice mail was never returned.

Well said Fred! The stock stator is very reliable and if one wants to capture some of the power the stock stator puts out, they can go to LEDs and take other measures to help manage the battery charge etc.

Does the KLR need the stator for the engine to run? I thought the stator
was only to provide modern conveniences like headlight, brake light, etc.
thx

There are two stator coils that look different than the others. They are the ignition coils and if they are good the bike will run whether or not the generating coils are working. That's why you can bump start a KLR that has a totally dead battery.

What LED components do you suggest to lower the amp draw on the stock stator? Looking for high quality, reliable (stock part reliability or better) direct replacement parts. I would like to add heated grips and a few other items but am concerned over the total amp draw. Reducing the amp draw of necessary parts (while not adversely impacting safety) would certainly help.

<><><><><><><><> <><><><><><><><> Pat, On my 2003 KLR650 I've replaced the tail/brake lite with a LED version from Dual-Star. I don't think it's available anymore but it was popular in 2003/4. Other than that all my stock electrical components are original. I run heated grips, a heated vest (both controlled with heat trollers) a GPS and sometimes an iPod. My bike still charges my Walmart slosh battery without issue. Also I suppose worthy of note is I run two radiator fans since I have two radiators. But I've only heard them come on twice since I added them and that wasn't in conditions needing heated grips or vest. : ) And both times they came on they only ran for about 30 seconds. My guess is on a pre 08 KLR you have about 100 watts to play with. On a post 07 KLR you probably have about 130 watts to play with. Maybe the most important part of the charging system is having a battery in good condition with clean, tight connections. Best,

Yah, maybe - but EVERYONE knows that's because they're RUSSIAN designed, with REALLY big tolerances (when they're really BIG, do they still get called "tolerances"?).
Cheers,
