~~~About a month ago I pulled the left outer case cover off my 08' KLR so I could replace the o-ring on the balance shaft adjustment bolt. Mine was leaking After several pairs of eyes got to looking at these two gear shaft sets, the better set of eyes=:-) noticed one of the shims was missing. I didn't want to (because I'm lazy=:-) but I pulled the rotor to go looking for it. Sure enough, the shim flipped off when the outer case cover was pulled and wound up behind the rotor on the bottom of the case, but you would never have seen the shim nor been able to fetch it w/o pulling the rotor first FWIW, I buttoned it up with a new rotor bolt when re-assembling, along with the new balance shaft adjustment bolt o-ring I had and set out to replace. Was able to re-use the outer case cover case gasket though I had a new one in the event the oem gasket was torn upon cover removal (((For the poster up in Alaska contemplating doing the doo R&R-))) By all means go ahead and do this job on your own. If you get in the weeds, stop, walk away from it and consult this board or another group forum (I like KLR World Forum) before moving forward. You will recieve the help you need. Jake Reddick Fla. Be carefull to not lose the tiny washers on the shafts of those gears (one washer on each end of the two shafts). The one shaft is part of the gear (still has a washer on each end) and lower one has a washer at each end of the removable shaft "and" there are two sets of needle bearings inside that gear. It doesn't matter which washer goes where or if the needle bearings go in one way or the other - they just have be in there on re-assembly. Because of the oil film, people lose these washers because they might stick to one surface or the other. Just find them right away and put them in one spot. >
