are hid lights worth it?

Post by Craig Kahler » Sat Dec 19, 2009 5:21 pm

I want more light. I'm considering an HID head light conversion kit for around $70 and HID fog lamps for around $150. Are they really that much better than a standard head light and $20 Walmart fog lamps?
Also, will the KLR handle the added wattage of the fog lights?

Attachments : My experience with HID lights is the suck every bug from every field out, and directly towards the HID lights. But the bike should be able to run them. I've replaced all my lights (brake/turn) with LED lights, and when I have th HID on, the stock headlamp is off (offroad only). Craig Kahler wrote:

are hid lights worth it?

I added eBay $25 3in driving lights on a aluminum plate with a mod using 6 watt bright led bulbs from Canada ($30). I have a 100 watt H4 headlight bulb using a headlight relay/harness off the battery (Admotostuff.com). Next step is Hid if a high/low unit is available. I use standard stator fine, but have a Moose higher stator if needed. Mark in No. Nevada Sent from my iPod

are hid lights worth it?

I am currently using a Dual headlight from an 03 Buell with H-7 HID lamps on my 06 KLR 650. I have no plans to go back to the stock setup. I started with a stock housing and 80/100w H-4 lamps. I wanted more.I then went to the Chinese made Hid H-4 in the stock housing. Great improvement in light but lacked side vision on tight East Tennessee mountain roads. I have used up three Chinese HID Ballast before as a last resort bought a  made in Japan unit for a Nissan car. I have two relays. Its wired for high beam / low beam / and a 30 amp toggle switch between relays for both beams. The down side is that you lose the ability to switch between hi and low quickly due to the pause for warm up with HID lights. It is for me worth the trade off.  I also run a volt meter. My voltage is between 13.5 and 14.1 at highway speeds and seldom drops below 12.2 even at idle. That voltage seems to be the same with or without the sidecar. This is somewhat improved from halogen lighting. I hope this helps.

#ygrps-yiv-491073183 p {margin:0;}As I understand, Harley is honoring the warranties for Buells.  I would be wary of parts availability in the future though.  $0.02 -Jeff Khoury

Good idea / bad idea. I like the bike and almost bought one last year but is it a good idea since Buell is now defunct? Anybody else have one? Criswell
