water density

Post by Mark Harfenist » Thu Dec 17, 2009 4:04 pm

Actually water is at its most dense at that temperature.  Water is at its "largest" as steam, which is what made a lot of things possible back in the day.  This aside, water is far "larger" as ice than as liquid: about 10%.  That's why icebergs float with 10% (more or less) out of the water: they're 10% less dense. I've oversimplified horribly, of course, as is my wont. All of this doesn't alter the fact that, in the absence of really and truly compelling reasons to do otherwise, 50/50 antifreeze/water mix is a good idea for a wide variety of reasons.  Mark (From Peru, where my road-weary KLR has survived multiple trips over 13 and now 14,000 feet without notable incident.  Stock jets, original carburator, idle mix screw never drilled, etc. There is some astoundingly good riding hereabouts, both paved and unpaved.)
