what can cause flooding and how can i test?

my bike appears to be flooding at various times. its will run fine for 3 times then flood and keep running so rich it stalls out unless i keep the rpm over 2500. then runs fine 10 mins later. or maybe an hour. it is NOT the float stuck open and nothing has come out the overflow that i have noticed. what is possible correct me if i am wrong. blocked air intake? (creating more vacuum raising the slide more?) leaking diaphragm on peacock (sucking gas into carb?) what else? i have swapped carbs with a loaner and still have the same problem i have swapped carbs with a loaner and still have the same problem (have to say it twice it SHOULD not be a carb problem) klr6502k

<><><><><><><><> <><><><><><><><> klr6502k, My wild guess is the petcock vacuum diaphragm has a slight tear. Sometimes it leaks fuel and sometimes it doesn't leak as much fuel. I suspect Jeff's diagnosis proves correct. To test if the diaphragm is leaking you can pull the vacuum line from the petcock and examine the inside of the line. It should be free of gasoline. If gasoline is found inside the line, that gasoline came though the leaking petcock diaphragm. I had similar symptoms when I was rejetting as a result of adding the 685 kit. It seemed that the bike was too lean much of the time but at other random times is seemed much too rich . It proved to be too lean under normal conditions and too rich when raw gasoline from the leaking diaphragm ran down the petcock vacuum hose and entered the carb. If the diaphragm is leaking I would not recommend replacing the fragile diaphragm with the OEM part. Better IMHO to use a manual conversion kit or replace the petcock entirely with a Pingel. I have the Pingel and like it but it is not inexpensive.
