stepping up for the good stuff

I don't buy cheap tires. I wear an Arai helmet. And Aerostich riding gear with the optional armor. I only buy the toughest Sidi motocross boots. Dainese gloves. I won't leave home without all of it. My fear is that I'll be riding down the road and wake up uninjured in bankruptcy court.

I'd say don't buy *bad* tires. I've yet to see price be a deciding factor in quality within the parameters of the tire (max speed/pressure/temps etc) Devil's advocate may question how you figure Arai helmets, AS gear and Sidi boots etc are the best of the best. -----Original Message----- From: DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com [mailto:DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com] On Behalf Of hershonm I don't buy cheap tires. I buy GOOD tires, ones that work well, and LAST! If they're also CHEAP, then so much the better! I put fresh K270s at 36 psi on before my Alaska trip (7,700 m or 12,400 kms), and they survived the Dempster (1,000 miles of broken rock and gravel!), though my rear got several cuts between the knobs so I changed the rear out when I returned. The front I just reversed. My KLR probably weighed 680 pounds fully loaded w/ full gas, me on it. DON'T confuse PRICE with QUALITY, because they can be polar opposites! My .02$ Ed

tire upgrade question on heavy tubes

Post by tlz4u » Sat Aug 15, 2009 11:38 am

Fellow Listers, I don't believe that there is any question that the heavy duty tubes create more heat in the tire. Tests that I've read (years ago, BTW) indicate that indeed they do, to a significant degree. (Pun intended :D) However, that can be countered by running them at the higher pressures. They are intended for the rougher going, and for the consequently lower speeds imposed by those conditions, not for the road and the higher speeds. They generate higher temperatures due to the increased flexing of the thicker rubber. Increasing the pressure reduces the flexing, etc. BTW, I ride my KLR on the road only, with just occaisional detours on gravel or 'improved', un-paved roads. I have installed a Pirelli ST-90 tire of the appropriate size on the rear. It is rated as 95% street. 5% off road tire. Has anybody else used that tire? What was your experience with it/them? Thanks,
