A good video and Bob Basso is a charismatic speaker, but he was never called to the White House to discuss it. That part is a persistent rumor; it never happened. ...unless they actually did get him to swear to silence, but given his personality, it is unlikely that he would have agreed to that.

Yeah, saw that. He corrected that rumor in his latest YouTube video. I'm actually surprised it hasn't been pulled off YouTube yet... Anyway,

klr650 : more of " chain tension question "

Post by Bill Watson » Tue Jul 07, 2009 7:13 pm

Jake, I also was used to the 70 s chains that would get replaced at pretty frequent intervals. I remember how I d adjust my chain tension every 1,000 miles or so. Now flash-forward to modern o-ring chains like the KLR has and you might be surprised how long they last I went 12,000 miles before my first chain adjustment on my KLR! I guess my broad answer to your question would be: If there are any missing o-rings, replace. If there are any missing rollers, replace. If not, then pull back on the chain at the 3:00 point on the rear sprocket. If you can see more than of a tooth, replace. Otherwise, inspect occasionally and enjoy. My data answer to your question would be: With mostly street riding such as you do: I flip the front sprocket every 7,500 and replace it every 15,000 miles The factory chain went 34,000 miles with only 1% stretch The factory rear sprocket is STILL on the bike now, with 45,000 miles, and still looks great This is documented at the link The WD-40 experiment and O-ring vs. Non O-ring chains at www.xanga.com/watt_man . A recent photo of the rear sprocket, when it had 43,000 miles on it, is in post #15 at: http://www.klr650.net/forums/showthread.php?t=67640 . You ll find the numbers vary person-to-person. I only know of two numbers above mine, but they re way up there the originator of the 685 big-bore kit, KLR Cary, went 66,000 miles on his original chain and sprockets. The president of FSSNOC, rumor has it, went 90,000 miles on his stock chain. So now my 34,000 number looks low! My point inspect per the first paragraph and see what works for you. Bill Watson Phoenix, AZ www.xanga.com/watt_man ~~~I was planning on replacing both oe front and rear sprocket and chain at 12 K miles (8 K miles now). Too soon? What is the general consensus as to when oem drive chain and sprockets should be replaced with normal chain maint.? My normal chain maint. program consists of lube with Maxima Chain wax approx every 200 miles, chain gets degreased about once every 1000 miles. Degreasing consists of me hitting the chain with a spray bottle of water soluble degreaser using a parts brush to work the degreaser, water hose rinse, then dry with the air nozzle from the air compressor, re-lube with Maxima chain wax. My KLR is mostly ridden on paved roads This 08' KLR is the first chain drivemn machine for me since 95' but, prior to that, tracing back to the start of my riding days (starting out on enduros-1975) , conventional wisdom was to replace both sprockets and the chain every 12 K miles. Obviously with proper care the chain and sprockets will go fruther than 12 K miles but isn't it a good idea to replace these parts at the 12 K interval or no? What say others? Curious minds...
