spark plug life
Hey All,
I clean and check the gap of my spark plug every 3k miles, but at
what mileage should the stock plug be replaced? The bike runs great
and there's never been any fouling other than normal use. I
currently have 8k so my 9k service is coming up pretty soon on my
A-15.
Thanks!
Philip

I searched the archives but could not find anything on how many miles
one should go before it is necessary to change the spark plug. My KLR
has 13K miles and is still running good on the original plug. But it is
getting about time to change it?

You could probably change it, but I left my original plug in there for 42k before i couldn't stand it any more and swapped in a new one when I did my regular 35,000-mile valve adjustment. The gap was pretty wide, but it was still sparking away happily. Neither the valve adjustment nor the fresh plug made my bike run any better.> > > I searched the archives but could not find anything on how many miles > one should go before it is necessary to change the spark plug. Spark plug replacement is in 7,500 mile increments according to my 09's
owner's manual.
Sure, they last a lot longer with a stock engine running today's unleaded
gasoline.
For $3, it's too inexpensive to not change. Heck, splurge and get an
iridium equiv.
It's still not a high dollar item. =)

22,000 miles and the same plug. Replaced a lot of other stuff, but the
plug is just fine so far.

Gotta ask: How much difficulty are the the higher mileage plugs offering when they do get removed.
Think dissimilar metals in close, tight proximity under heat & pressure for a long time.
That scares me somehow.
