Hi guys, Problems occuring on a 1985 KLR600,my problems started last week. My bike would start fine but leak fuel from the overflow pipe even when riding (leak more than what is in the bowl, heavy leakage) When I would stop riding and cut the bike engine out the leak would continue but eventually it would refrain from leaking.
A few days ago I took the carburettor apart and cleaned it there was an awful lot of dirt in the top of the carb where the large diaphram was. Unfortunately I also took the pilot screw out to clean. When I replaced this I turned all the way to seat and back out 2 turns. There wasnt much dirt in the bowl just a few specs of dirt which i removed.
Now I have reassembled the bike and am finding the bike wont start.
Bike starts with easy start being sprayed in the air box but cuts out once it has burnt away.
Any help would be of massive appreciation as i cannot afford to take the bike to a mechanic and it is my A - B transport.

klr600 carburettor fuel problem not starting
Ben,
Carb off the bike & upside down with the bowl off, there's a resting float height measurement for most carbs.
Sorry, I don't know the correct # for a the KLR. Dig around online and you might can find the measurement, if it's not in the book.

PS: off-topic..... Ben, got any relatives from Griffin, Ga.? I was in the scouts with Robert Smalley years ago. His Dad was the city attorney. =)

I have read in the book that I need an auxillary gas tank and a fule line and a fuel level and allsorts of bits that i dont think i have! Is there an easy way to sorting the float height. --- On Mon, 6/1/09, transalp eddie wrote: From: transalp eddie Subject: RE: [DSN_KLR650] KLR600 Carburettor Fuel Problem Not Starting To: "benji_sounds" Date: Monday, June 1, 2009, 2:07 PM You might have a couple problems going on at once. The petcock could have a weak spring on the vacuum diaphragm + carb's the float needle & seat could be "tired" or partially clogged with dirt. You may have fixed the carb just fine only to accidentally reintroduce dirt through a contaminated fuel line, too. I did a customer's GS500 a few years ago with similar issues. The bike was spotless and had a repainted gas tank installed. Turned out the painter set it on the ground somewhere and got dirt in the fuel outlet. It washed into the line when connected and we must've taken the carb apart three times before we shot compressed air through the fuel line and cleared out the gunk. lol Another thought: The float level might be wayyyyy off (too high) and the carb is dumping fuel into the intake - creating the hard start issue. Once stopped, the overflow accepts the extra gas plus whatever runs down out of the fuel line. The ether you are using might be thinning stuff out. It's also been known to combust with almost no compression, under water, using a wad of gum for a spark plugs,etc... eddie > [Original Message] > From: benji_sounds > To: DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com> > Date: 6/1/2009 8:54:16 AM > Subject: [DSN_KLR650] KLR600 Carburettor Fuel Problem Not Starting > > Hi guys, Problems occuring on a 1985 KLR600,my problems started last week. Hey all:
Tony G. (ilv2wheels) has taken a new job in San Antonio, and is moving there on 06/15/09. Since qualifying to see him at the hospital there might not be a good thing, Tony and Martha Lewis have kindly consented to having the party at Eurosport Cycle (3100 Airport Freeway, Fort Worth N32.76678,W97.30269) around the SW corner of 121 and Riverside on Thursday, 06/11/06 at 7 PM. There will be BBQ (Up In Smoke) and beer as well as soft drinks. Unfortunately, no bikinis or band are scheduled. Phone RSVP for a rough headcount would be nice but not required at (800 or 817) 838-8135. See you there!
