not starting...and i'm all choked up

Post by traderpro2003 » Wed Aug 13, 2008 9:57 pm

From a cold start, I used to set the choke on full and it would start right up and run at high idle. Now, with full choke it won't even start unless I give it a little throttle and hold it. Once it's started if I release that little bit of throttle it sounds like it hasn't run in awhile (thud thud thud) and doesn't idle higher. But if I hold a bit of throttle it runs fine. Then maybe 20 seconds it runs like normal and once I get out on the road it runs normal and idles normal. Before I go too deep, any thoughts what to do/check? It has fuel in the line (see through filter and used an allen wrench to drip some from the bowl), no holes in the fuel petcock vacuum line, I cleaned the air filter, did a general 'nothing wierd' visual inspection...even splashed some Fat Tire Ale on it...nothing helped.

Sounds like something's clogged up, or like your idle enricher isn't activating. Maybe the cable's stretched or something. Try running some seafoam through the carb and see if that helps, and check the cable to make sure it's pulling the enricher knob down at the carb.

<><><><><><><><><> <><><><><><><><><> traderpro2003, Your comment that with full choke you must hold the throttle open for about 20 seconds suggests it's running rich. Have you tried not using the choke or using less choke when starting? Holding the throttle part way open allows more air into the mixture leaning it out. A cold engine needs a little bit richer mixture to start but once running with the combustion chamber warming it can quickly be leaned out. i.e. reduce the amount of choke used. When was the last time you checked valve clearances and what did you set them at? Some folks report that when the clearances close up the choke starts acting like an on/off switch with no middle ground. I'm surprised splashing Fat Tire Ale on it didn't help. It all started after a hard-n-fast ride over say 5 hours--higher end of the tach (partially due to 14T front sprocket). Not until I went to start it after being parked for 5-days at a trail head (to hike and fish) did I notice the problem starting. I couldn't get it to start until I tried adding some throttle. I'm hoping something is clogged. Unfortunately, I no longer live by the ocean; otherwise, I'd try the seafoam. ;) Not sure my auto shops carry this. But thanks for the rec. Probably, I'll remove the carb clean it, check the enricher and cable.
