Had my first bad crash on my KLR today. Cruising about 50 on a dirt road, 2 miles from my house, and a deer comes out of the weeds right into the side of me. I got knocked over and slid about 100 feet in the gravel. Nothing on me broken, but my left knee, shoulder, and wrist took a beating. No broken skin either, which is amazing. I'm not looking forward to tomorrow though! My gear saved my butt, I always ride ATGATT. All my gear is trashed now, but if it wasn't for what I was wearing I'd be in ER right now getting rocks pulled out of my leg. The bike's not in too bad of shape. The only metal that's bent is the shifter and handle bars. The front fender, left hand guard, and the radiator cover are chewed up too. The forks are twisted up, but that's easy to fix. After watching the deer stagger off, I stood the bike up, looked it over and limped it the rest of the way home. Darren, really glad you are mostly ok. I'm with you on the atgatt. Even though it can be a hassle and often too hot. Like here in the South Salt Lake Valley right now. In full gear right now, it is almost too uncomfortable too ride (for me, I've grown used to cooler climes over the years). I've compromised some and have been wearing Canyon pants, 1st Gear Meshtex jacket, combat boots, helmet and gloves. Around here, in addition to the majority not wearing helmets, people also dress like they are going to the beach while riding. My girlfriend and I took a ride over Guardsmans Pass the other day (in 4runner) and I saw couples in tank tops, shorts and flip-flops riding dualsports on the dirt roads. It made me shudder to think of going down like that in the rocks and gravel. I saw a group of kids on rental Honda Ruckas and the gals were in miniskirts with semi-high heel shoes. Each too their own, but I think most people copy other's behavior and have yet to have a major wipeout in their lives (possibly of any kind, as a teen, I figured out protection was good after many highspeed wipeouts bombing canyons on a skateboard). To quote Dr. Evil "People Die!!!!" And how about those deer?! Animals are scary. I try to be especially cautious in the evening hours. My most scary animal moment on a bike without a collision: going aprox. 50 miles an hour, dark, raining, near Pink Mountain, ak highway, I look to my right and I am whizzing by a giant moose with about 4 feet to spare. Darren, John, Or, you could consider that God put the deer there in the first place, perhaps as a character- building experience. Or maybe a crucial ATGATT confirmation that'll be even more important in the future. Or perhaps God had nothing to do with it at all. No kidding. As one who had a very seriuos collision with a deer on a bike at 17, I'm with our on that idea. Don't get me wrong, I like wildlife as much as the next guy, but Craig and Jud hit it right on the head. I read an article in Raders Digest a couple of years ago that claimed the leading cause of death in Wisconsin was autp accidents involving deer. How many deer are enough? North of me they are having an open season on the deer. Shoot as many as you like, use spotlights or any other means necessary. The DNR is trying to contain an disease outbreak in the deer that is affecting the cattle ranchers. I wish they would do the same thing here. Ross Lindberg Fertile, MN

May Walt Disney's disembodied spirit be burning in the flames of Hell for that movie and the plague of four-hooved rats that it unleashed upon our countryside. (And yes, I've hit Bambi with my car too, though luckily it was Bambi and not Bambi's mom and thus it went under the car rather than over the car... still was a $1800 repair bill between new bumper, paint job, new radiator, and all that). -E
