I'm geting ready to make a purchase of a dual sport,I've had my mind
made up for a klr for awhile,Would I be better off with the 08,or a
slightly older bike that has already been modified for someone 5'7"-
30"inseam.My current bike( 87Yamaha FJ1200)has a seat height of about
30.5" but the seat is wide.Any info would be appreciated. Thanks BO-

My inseam is 31" but I only weigh 150 lbs so I don't squish the
suspension down too much. Before you lower a bike, sit on it, and ride
it if you can. Flat footing a bike is overrated in my book. As long as
I have a toe down on either side I'm in control. There are times when
you may need to slide off the side of the seat a bit to steady it, but
that's how shorter people ride taller bikes. Jimmy Lewis isn't a giant
and he handles a KTM 950 Adventure just fine. I tried lowering links on
my DR-Z400S, which is taller than the KLR, and they softened the
suspension too much. I settled for having Sargent Cycle Products cut
the seat down for me.

keeping your powder dry.
The mention earlier today about keeping your junk dry on trips
reminded me that last year on my major trip I kept my stuff dry by
having liners in my saddlebags, and plastic garbage bags also. At the
first sign of rain the liners go in to a bag, tie off the top, and there
you are. Just a tip for the cash-starved, or thrifty, or whatever label
you want to stick on it,

My wife & I each have lowered KLR's and we have ridden them through
Canada, Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, Belize, El Salvador and the US,
fully loaded ( when you ride with your wife nothing is left behind)
and life is grand. We don't do gnarly offroad with them, be there done
that with 200cc size bikes that were alot more fun. Contrary to what
some say, traveling with a very loaded KLR, flat footing both feet for
us is what makes riding the KLR's fun. When a fully loaded KLR starts
going over on its side, just step off and away and say timber. Then
pick it up after the dust settles.
