how can i improve the gas mileage on my klr?

My prue stock (engine-wize), with 15T:44T gearing, MEFO Explorer Sport 99s gets 55-57 mpg, according to the dubious KLR speedo/odo. If our readings are real, then we have to look at the other variables, such as, weather (you're colder than me - southcentral PA - the bike may not be at optimum combustion efficiency for most of your commute - may need to add a Thermo-Bob), differences in gas blends between regions (your's should have more "bang for the buck" with a lower boiling point blend needed in the colder climates), and then we come to driving style/conditions (high rpms, a lot of sitting at stop lights, or leisurely country roads). Any ideas? Don R100, A6F

This year we're up to $3.59 and rising fast - up 10c in the last 2 weeks. So, how about some ideas for improving the MPG?
