first valve adjustment
I thought I would join in on the fun. I did my first valve adjustment
to my 05 KLR with 6,200 miles. Everything is OK now but what a
nightmare it`s been! Everything went fine durring the disassembly,
that is untill I got to the cam cap bolts. I managed to get five of
them loose but the remaining three wouldn`t budge. I managed to use
my inceadible hulk like streangth and ended up rounding the bolt
heads off. I had to end up taking my bike to a machine shop so they
could loosen those three bolts. Cost $100. They had weld nuts on top
of the bolts in order to loosen them. Before I loosened the bolts I
determined that I had a left intake valve was out of tolerence. It
was reading .002 inches. The other three valves were within spec but
close to the edge so I decided to change all the shims while I was in
there. Left Exhaust=.008 Right Exhaust.007 Left intake .002 Right
intake .005 in. Strange thing is that when I put the new shims in,
the clearences didn`t chnge that much or not at all. I don`t remember
the original shim sizes (I`m not at home). But the Left intake was
replaced with a smaller shim 255 to a 250and I still have a .008
clearence. Right exhaust was replaced 255 shim to a 250 and gained
only a .001 clearence (.007 to a .008). O`well at least all the
valves are within spec now. I learned a major lesson. DO NOT USE A
MULTI POINT CHINEESE SOCKET ON CAM CAP BOLTS. I didn`t know any
better. I`m now a proud owner or a 6 point 10 mm craftsmen socket.
Oh, and the bike is fine! Thanks.

I never made the trip again--after I bought the KLR. sigh. so many missed opportunites... Hope you all have fun. Looks like a hoot. revmaaatin. more snow tonight--6-10inches in the forecast
