Well at 7500 miles I checked my valve clearance and found that I was on the lower end of the zone. So I adjusted. Everything went great except I stripped the valvecover threads on one whole $30 for drill and heli-coil. Live and learn. The process is not very difficult especially with shim-calc. Dive in and do it. I was going to wait for 8/10/02 for the tech sessions but now I am an old-timer at this. Good luck TC

first valve adjustment
at 6700ish miles i have tried to destroy my klr
by atempting something else i've never done.
did yall know that a shim is about the size of a quarter
does anyone know if you can use a 25mm shim from a ktm\duc\tri dealer
also does the arrow on the exhaust cam holder point forward in the
same direction as the intake holders.
i have bought and installed the european trash shims(2-55).
installing the ex. cam holder with the arrrow pointing towards the
sparkplug gave a feeler guage reading unchanged from the factory shims
(260).
turning the cam holder to point to the front gave me a reading i
expected from the new shims. i have started the bike and it ran
without any drama. please let me know if you know of any fatal flaws
from my work.
25mm shims not from kawasaki
exaust cam holder arrow pointing towards headlight

<><><><><><><><> <><><><><><><><> hal2006, The KLR uses 29mm shims. Same as the BMW F650 and I'm told a Ford Taurus but I've never checked on the Taurus. Smaller shims could cause damage to the cam, shim bucket or other components. Always rotate the engine in a counterclockwise direction. For checking valve clearances all cam lobes will point away from the center of the engine. The arrows on the cam gears will point forward. The marks at the rear of the cam gears should be at the same level as the top of the head. Tension should be on the forward run of chain going to the crank and the top run of chain (between the cam gears) should be taut. The cam chain tensioner will take up the slack on the rear run of chain. Always rotate the engine in a counterclockwise direction. Hey Eddie - I'm in NOLA on an '03, and ride w/ my father who's on an '06. Let me know if you're interested in riding out to the spillway this weekend.
