2008 blows main fuse?
My 2008 blew the main fuse at the worst possible time, I was passing a bus at night, with barely enough room, when boom, the whole thing dies?!?! Barely escaped death as the oncoming cars saw what was going down and stopped in time.
I had no tools (who needs tools on a new bike?) So I had it towed to my local shop, he never really did find any blatant trouble, though he saw some wiring running along the fram under the tank that "could have been" suspect. He taped them up and it is running, but now it has me scared, my days off are spent alone, 30-40-60 miles into the mountenous interior here in WA, would hate to have the same thing happen on one of those rides.
Anyone have suggestions on where I might look?
Also, side note, ordered my Zumo 550, should I wire it myslef or have a pro do it?

<><><><><><><> <><><><><><><> Sean, No experience here with a 2008 other than looking at one in the show room but I won't let that stop me from commenting. : ) If KHI is still using glass fuses that would be my guess if nothing obvious shows up. The mechanic should be able to inspect wires and see/discover a bare spot causing a short. "Suspect" means nothing to me in this regard. I would also hope the mechanic did a load test of the system just to make sure it doesn't have an unwanted draw. An electrical savvy person should be able to hook up an amp meter pretty easily and check the system. If the system is drawing more than probably 15 amps with the engine running and the high beam on I'd guess you have an additional electrical load. But remember that's just a guess since I've never messed with a 2008 model. I don't know what's required to wire in a Zumo 550. If all it requires is 12 volt power that should be pretty easy. If it needs more than that maybe let the list know what else is required and get some pointers. I'd guess you could add a new power circuit with fuse and relay so the power was key controlled. Or make it just hot all the time so the Zumo 550 doesn't turn off when you turn off the bike for fuel stops or other breaks. If it uses an automotive type power plug you could install a power outlet (socket) that's hot all the time and could also be used with a battery charger. When you wire in power for the Zumo 550 I suppose that could be a good time to also change glass type fuse holders for the more common automotive ATO type fuses and holders. I think the ATO type fuses are a bit more robust than glass type fuses. I run mine off the City Lights circuit but I guess the 08 doesn't have that circuit, so I would tap into something switched. It draws VERY little power. I rigged mine up with a waterproof SAE connector so it is easy for me to disconnect it and reconnect it. The Zumo is cool in that when it loses power (ie: when I switch off the key on my bike), it pops up a dialog box that asks if you want to continue on internal battery power. If you don't press the YES button it will power down in 20 seconds. For a fuel stop just hit YES and it will continue, uninterrupted. It's a very cool, very well-thought-out-for-motorcycles device.> I don't know what's required to wire in a Zumo 550. If all it requires > is 12 volt power that should be pretty easy. I've done that on my A17. Michael -- "Tragedy is when I cut my finger. Comedy is when you fall into an open manhole and die." -- Mel Brooks San Francisco, CA> automotive ATO type fuses and holders. I think the ATO type fuses are a > bit more robust than glass type fuses.

2008 blows main fuse?
On my touring bikes I always used to mount inexpensive auxiliary lights for
that very reason.

desmoparts screw kits for klr -
I just got a set of allen head stainless screws from Desmoparts for my
2001 KLR. They make a body set and an engine set and they look great.
Replace all the Phillips head screws on my bike and look great! Not
cheap, but high quality and good instructions.
