put somewhat stock muller back on

Post by Adam » Sat Mar 08, 2008 5:03 pm

A couple of year ago I decided I would go against the grain a little and build a new exhaust system for my A18. So I made a new stepped header and Super trapp type muffler in my spare time. I was very happy with te way it came out and I fixed a problem while I did it. I made the connection between the header and the muffler about 2 inches farther back so if it did develop a leak it wouldn't blow a hole in the air box. One problem, it got LOUDER. So after 3 years of repacking (6 times) I decided to put the stock muffler on but keep the stepped header I made. Only 1 thing, I hated Mr. Tweety. Since I had to modify it to attach to the larger header, I would get rid of Mr. Tweety also. Out came the band saw, hole saw and welder. I opened up the inlet side right behind the first carbon plug and removed everything up to the spiral core spark arrestor in the upper can. Then I hole sawed the end (Tweety) out and put a 2" turn down. Saw it on a prior post a year or so ago. I was able to leave the 2" perforated pipe inside the rear of the can. All that is left is a perforated liner around the outside of the muffler, spark arrestor, 2" perforated pipe. I expected it to be loud but at least no repacking. Boy was I surprided when I started it and found out how QUIET it was even almost completly gutted. Best of all Tweety was gone for good and NO MORE REPACKING! Just thought I would share with the rest of the group. Don't be afraid to open the stock muffler a little, It sure sounds a lot better and is still VERY quiet. Thanks for posting the procedure and results. I'm glad it's working out well for you. question, mefo tire vs kenda 270`s

Post by Jud Jones » Sun Mar 09, 2008 8:10 pm

The K270 does indeed have a soft sidewall, so that higher than average pressures are called for. But the real attraction of the K270 is not just price, but the combination of price and durability. I have always been cognizant of cautionary comments about the risks of running K270s in rocky country. At the same time, I have received excellent service from them, both on the road and in some of the rockiest possible venues, including Moab and Copper Canyon, without ever experiencing a rock cut. The MEFO may well be a superior tire; at $90, it should be. But until those reports of a 25,000-mile life expectancy come rolling in, I'm gonna have to take that proposition on faith, and continue to see the $35 K270 as giving a lot more performance for the buck. ;-{>

There is lots more than the number of plys that make up a good tire. I just squeezed the sidewall on a new K270 and a new MEFO and there is a noticeable difference in stiffness in favor of the MEFO. Some people like the Kenda but I think it's selling point is it's price. The selling point on the MEFO is it's performance. > I have most all MEFO tires in stock and should have the 21" MEFO in about three weeks. > > Fred > http://www.arrowheadmotorsports.com > http://s1.zetaboards.com/arrowhead > > > ----- Original Message ----- > From: Kyle > To: DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com > Sent: Saturday, March 08, 2008 5:03 PM > Subject: [DSN_KLR650] Question, Mefo Tire vs Kenda 270`s > > > I just recently just recieved a brand new Mefo rear tire.
