motard a klr

Post by Greg B » Sat Jan 26, 2008 7:37 pm

The motard mods create a whole new character for this bike. A more responsive urban commuter, a fun experience on your favourite twisty road, and yet still a capable dual sport bike. Note that it is no way near a serious motard machine. My 525 KTM motard is a very serious and violent machine. The KLR motard is sweet, relaxed and comfortable. You can throw the 21 inch front back on for more trail (or wet) orientated dirt work. I have done front /rear springs, emulators, fork brace and 320 rotor. I have a 50/50 motard front tyre (Maxxis) on a 2.5 inch rim. The rear is a standard 2.5 inch with the very popular Mefo tyre. A surprisingly good tyre even for the twisties. Cannot see any reason to go to a more road orientated tyre. So far I cannot see the point of going to wider rims unless you want the look. Wider tyres really wont grip significantly better either, they will probably reduce the left to right flickability. Dry dirt road/soft trails are ok with the 17 inch Maxxis. Ten minutes with practice gets the 21 inch back on anyway. I trust this helps. Greg B Australia mikeypep wrote: It must be winter. I find myself thinking of KLR mods rather than riding. Does the fact that we hit -16F this week have anything to do with it? I've been reading my stash of cycle magazines and other than "more horsepower" the biggest news in motorcycledom this year is the Supermotard. Ducati and Aprilia have a pretty sweet motard. Husqvarna and Suzuki have excellent Motard bikes, although the 'Zuki is kinda smallish and the Husqvarna is pretty much made of unobtainium. At least the parts are. Gets me to thinking about KLR mods'. I have a couple of pictures of motarded KLR's and I really (really) like the look. The big question is, is it worth it? Even a box stock KLR with street tires is pretty good in the smiles department when pushed to the pegs, and the easy mod of an 18 or 19 inch front tire is reported to be significant as well. Is a full bucks supermotard KLR worth the expense? I'm guessing the full mods; 17 inch front, bars, some body parts and such, would probably run about $1500. Add another 500 for a wide rear tire. My quandry is, is it worthwhile? I'd like some feedback from you KLRista who have done something crazy like this, or some opinions from you who have thought about it. C'mon, winter is winding down and I'll be out there riding soon. --------------------------------- Make the switch to the world's best email. Get the new Yahoo!7 Mail now.
