tire time

I know tire talk gets old, but I am buying rubber this week so that I'm ready when Old Man Winter takes a break from beating on us up here in Western NY. Nothing to slippery on pavement, and no D606's. I don't go off-road enough to need them. What tire do you all think is the BEST compromise? Any thoughts on the IRC GP110, I hear they're pretty good. Get the 110s very nice tires and look cool too. I'll post a pic in the photos section for a couple of days with them mounted on my bike. --Jim A-15

You might want to consider the GP-110 front (mounted backwards) Duro 904 rear combo. The price is certainly right. mrodub wrote: I know tire talk gets old, but I am buying rubber this week so that I'm ready when Old Man Winter takes a break from beating on us up here in Western NY. Mike, I'm a big fan of the GP110s. Great street tire, and works surprisingly well in the dirt. I've put a photo together with the common six tires and their patterns, which I think would help the group as this question comes up about every 3 weeks. I'll post it Monday and send out a link. tire time

I just installed TKC80s and rode all over creation today, from paved mountain passes to snot-slippery unpaved mountain passes. I'm very impressed with the on-road performance of what is commonly thought of as a 50/50 tire. FWIW, they're replacing Distanzias. It took me ten minutes to get used to the different feel on-road (they don't like to transition as easily) -- they're plenty grippy. --John Kokola

The D607s are coming off and will be replaced with TKC80s. Any suggestions for the best place to order these tires and some heavy duty tubes? The local Kawasaki dealer had never heard of TKC80s... Thanks, Steve A13

He has "bmw" in his mailing address, which should be a clue (heh!). For me, I just ride the TKC-80's when I'm going to be dirt+highway and need good manners on both. If I'm commuting or otherwise putting lots of miles on my bike, I swap to other tires. $183 once a year is quite doable. $183 every three months... well, at that point, I would definitely look for a less expensive way to get to work.
